Quebec mosque shooter sentenced to life with no parole for 40 years

Source: BBC

A Canadian man who killed worshippers in a Quebec City mosque in 2017 has been sentenced to life in prison.

Alexandre Bissonnette, 29, will be eligible for parole in 40 years.

The prosecution had asked for a total of 150 years behind bars, which would have been the harshest jail penalty ever handed down in Canada.

Justice Francois Huot chose instead to allow for the possibility of parole within Bissonnette's natural life.

FOX News and Junior tweeted he was “Moroccan Muslim” and Trudeau had them apologize for spreading fake rumors. The killer turned out to be a RW nut and Trump fan.

The judge wrote a 246 page opinion, and spent 6 hours reading it aloud. It sounds like it left everyone dissatisfied.

Aymen Derbali, who was shot seven times and left paralyzed from the waist down, told reporters he did not understand why the judge dwelled on Bissonnette's life expectancy and the possibility that he would die in prison. "We were astonished, we were very upset after this sentence," Derbali said.

Boufeldja Benabdallah, president of the mosque that was attacked, said community members were "stunned" by the decision and felt the judge was more concerned about the dignity of the killer than that of the victims and their families.
....

The Criminal Code was amended in 2011 to allow a judge to impose consecutive sentences in cases of multiple murder, but it was clear as Huot spent nearly six hours reading the decision that he was wrestling with the constitutionality of the provision. In the end he sentenced Bissonnette to concurrent life sentences for five murders, and on the sixth added 15 years to bring the total to 40.

The longest prison sentence in Canada to date is 75 years without parole, which has been given to at least five triple killers since the law was changed to allow consecutive sentences.

Toronto serial killer Bruce McArthur, who killed 8 men from Toronto's gay village was also sentenced today and only received 25 years before being eligible for parole. He would be 92 so it's still likely a life sentence, but life should be life.

If he becomes a better person while in prison, give him a chance for freedom at the ripe old age of 69. If not, then let him die in prison.
