A Michigan police officer forced a young black woman to walk home in frigid weather after a traffic stop, and then mocked her on social media.
The officer stopped Ariel Moore in Detroit on Tuesday for having expired license plate tags, and then made her leave the car there and walk, reported WXYZ-TV.
. . .
The officer, identified as Gary Steele, then recorded video of Moore walking away from her car and shared it on social media.
Steele can be heard making condescending remarks about Moore in the Snapchat video, which was captioned what black girl magic looks like and celebrating Black History Month.

(129,087 posts)they are either fired or resign and then go off to some other town and continue to wreak havoc at the new place. That's what happened with the cop who killed young Tamir Rice. He had been on the force at a nearby department and was deemed "unfit", resigned, joined Cleveland's PD (where their HR never bothered to verify his previous record)... and then when he was fired from there after the shooting, he was then accepted at yet another PD until the uproar was so great that he withdrew from the position.

(58,785 posts)Times have already changed, they just don't happen at the same rate everywhere.
But in an era when journalists and citizens can search on names and faces and blow the whistle on their local PDs, the days of an officer fired in Miami being able to "launder" himself just by moving and applying to some town hurting for applicants are coming to an end. Insurance companies are now able to search nationwide also, and they've always been a huge player in keeping employers from hiring bad people for jobs where they could do harm by refusing coverage. .
This incredibly stupid and contemptible officer changed his life forever when he outed his own actions. Posting any work-related action on social media has to be a fireable violation all by itself.

(58,785 posts)was new I wanted to buy a toaster and discovered that serious defects were being reported in most models of most makes of toasters, including respected name brands. An astounding number of them couldn't produce a decent piece of toast from day 1. Making and selling inadequate products was obviously so profitable that it had come to dominate the market. Now a large majority of toasters work pretty much as they're supposed to and good ones can be found at almost every price level.
I now think toasters were a bellweather.

(129,087 posts)the review sites (including Amazon) have been extremely helpful although in some cases early on, "fake" reviews were also littering those sites... which prompted things like "verified purchase" to at least establish that the reviewer was legit (and that includes an even later requirement for reviewers who received the item "free" or at a discount in exchange for a review, to identify such). Always something!

(58,785 posts)and government officials yet, but their doings are being discussed on more and more sites. Of course, local powers are typically deeply and widely embedded, and dislodging or forcing them to produce better product is not a fraction as easy as firing a bad cop. But I believe far more information easily accessible to the voters must already be sending alarming tremors through many of their worlds also.

The plea was offered by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office in the best interests of justice, Miller said.
Steele remains suspended and still could face other disciplinary actions, according to the Detroit Police Department.
Golematis testified during an earlier preliminary hearing that Steele choked her, straddled her when she fell to the ground and fired shots near the left side of her head. The incident happened when Steele went to her home to get the last of his belongings after their relationship dissolved.

Sadly, it's probably partly of an outcome of Detroit not having the resources (not unique to Detroit) for hiring good cops, or even enough cops.

It's time to put the blame on the individuals and the people within the system that hires them. Police departments and other public works/safety groups rely on the fact that they are not personally and financially responsible for misdeeds.
