GOP lawmaker who employs hundreds of minors looks to abolish all state child labor laws

Source: raw story

28 Jan 2019 at 08:09 ET

.........................

The Indy Star reports that Indiana state Sen. Chip Perfect has filed a bill that would get rid of work permit requirements for underage employees, while also removing restrictions on the hours underage teenagers can work.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

.............The Indy Star writes that, to drum up support for his bill, Perfect had his human resources director testify “in favor of the bill during a committee hearing last week, raising questions about whether his involvement in the legislation is a conflict of interest.”

However, Perfect is insisting that he is not conflicted in proposing the law, even though it would allow him to hire more minors and give them longer hours.

“It wouldn’t affect me directly, because as I testified today, we have invested an incredible amount of money and we are currently adhering to the laws,” Perfect said. “This is really more about small businesses who cannot afford the resources to adhere to these antiquated laws.”

... they think labor laws like this are "antiquated" and should be removed because, they say, "nobody would let their kids work like that these days"

Their evil and naive positions like this scares me.

I'm pretty sure a great number of them know darn well that single-parent families would certainly let their kids work. It would take care of two of their most pressing issues. Income and childcare. If the kids are busy slaving away at some job then the parents don't have to have after-school care (if they even go to school instead of work) and the family income is raised

Hundreds of thousands of kids would be taken out of school and put to work instead if this sort of thing becomes legal across the nation. This is just the camel's nose in the tent.

There's a reason why minors work hours are limited - kids are supposed to be in school.

My thoughts: I would limit the hours a minor can work to 2 hours max on any given weekday, 8 hours max on a weekend, maximum 12 hours per week. Maybe a little longer for a business which the parents own... e.g. a family farm. I wouldn't link any work permit to academic performance at school because there are some kids who will not be going to college. However schools need to know if the kids are working, so to have the schools administer a work permit program would be best. Ultimately it is the parent who would give permission for the child to work.
