Japan's supreme court rules in favor of forced sterilization of trans people

Source: LGBTQ Nation

By Alex Bollinger · Friday, January 25, 2019

The Japanese supreme court has ruled in favor of a law that requires transgender people to get sterilized in order to update their documents.

The case was brought by Takakito Usui, a trans man who wanted to update his papers but was told that he couldn’t because of a 2004 law that requires a trans person to have “a body which appears to have parts that resemble the genital organs of those of the opposite gender.”

“The essential thing should not be whether you have had an operation or not, but how you want to live as an individual,” Usui said. He appealed, but lost when a four-judge panel unanimously agreed that the law was constitutional.

The court ruled that the government had an interest in limiting societal “confusion” and “abrupt changes.”

Japanese surgeons were found guilty of this as war crimes in the aftermath of WWII.

Xmas has no religious connotation in Japan. But seriously, how many people have been executed in Japan over the last 20 years? 89 since 2000 as compared with the 892 in the US. So with three times the population of Japan, the US has executed 10 times more people. What was your point?

Every time an argument occurs about CP, someone will post a comment to the effect that the US is in league with countries like China, Saudi Arabia, etc. Most times they forget to mention Japan.

As far as Christmas Day relevance, my opinion is that it is deliberate, because much of the rest if the world is celebrating, so it would not appear on the news. Whereas on a slow news day, it might lead to a great deal of criticism in the World Press.

connection to CP in a country where the rule of law and due process are honored, I would agree that Japan is far more conservative, and less humanistic, than many liberals believe. If a preponderance of executions take place on Christmas Day, then you could be right that the day is chosen to prevent other countries from noticing. I haven't seen evidence that is the case.

One of them has to take the others's name when they marry. Otherwise there would be mass "societal confusion" and what about the children and so on. So this ruling is not a surprise.

I don't think the person you replied to believes that transgender people are deviants. It's like when people on here talk about Trump being a "very stable genius." The quotes in that context indicate disbelief and derision, as do the quotes around "deviancy" here.

I think you misinterpreted what was actually meant, because I definitely didn't read it that way. Maybe that's just me, though.

gender.

That's pretty different from 'mandatory sterilizations for trans-people'.

Granted, a sex change operation will, de-facto, sterilize you ... but ... it's a side effect, more or less.
