NEW YORK (AP) — A white supremacist pleaded guilty Wednesday to killing a black man with a sword as part of a racist plot that prosecutors described as a hate crime.

James Jackson admitted to fatally stabbing 66-year-old Timothy Caughman in 2017 after stalking a number of black men in New York City.

Jackson, who is white, told police he traveled from Baltimore to carry out the attack because New York is the media capital of the world.

He also said the slaying had been practice for further assaults on black people.

Police interview video shown at a pretrial hearing on Thursday, showed Mr Jackson saying he was particularly bothered by black men in the presence of white women as he hated interracial relationships.

“That’s the main crux for me,” he said. He added that interracial couples were “an insurmountable problem” for him.

Mr Caughman was collecting cans and bottles for recycling in the city’s midtown when Mr Jackson approached him and allegedly fatally stabbed him with a “Roman short sword” that he had tucked into his pants.

“I was just kind of processing what had happened” he told detectives. “If I just stab another person what difference does that make? The point’s already been made.”

Most chillingly, Jackson said he had traveled to New York from Baltimore intending to kill numerous black men, imagining that the bloodshed would deter white women from interracial relationships. "'Well, if that guy feels so strongly about it, maybe I shouldn't do it,'" he said, imagining how he wanted a white woman to think.

Jackson said he grew up in an "almost all-white" area outside of Baltimore. "My family is as liberal as they come ... typical liberal Democrats," he said.

His grandfather in Louisiana was "very pro-integration" and had crosses burned on his lawn, he said.

In 2009, he joined the Army and served as a military intelligence analyst in Kabul. He loved the "sense of mission" and embraced a vision of the U.S. as an imperialist power.

Stabbing of Timothy Caughman

On March 20, 2017, Timothy Caughman, a black 66-year-old man, was collecting cans for recycling in Manhattan, New York City when James Harris Jackson, a white 28-year-old man, allegedly approached him and stabbed him multiple times with a sword. Caughman later died of his injuries. Jackson subsequently turned himself in to police custody and confirmed that he traveled from Maryland to New York with the intention of killing black men in order to prevent white women from having interracial relationships with them.

Caughman was born in 1950 or 1951 in Jamaica, Queens. His parents were a home health care aide and a pastor. He was raised in the South Jamaica Houses in Queens. He graduated from Brooklyn College with an associate's degree and earned a living as a social service worker. He took up can and bottle recycling to earn money and keep busy. For the last 20 years of his life, he lived on West 36th Street in Manhattan, in a building known as The Barbour Hotel. It is now housing for people transitioning out of homelessness, but Caughman was not homeless.

In retrospect, the message James Harris Jackson wrote to his parents in the 2007 Friends School yearbook seems particularly poignant.

“Mom & Dad,” he wrote, “I will never be able to express how thankful I am for always having you guys there to support me no matter what.”

But last week, a lawyer told a judge that David and Patricia Jackson are no longer going to pay for their son’s defense as he faces murder, terrorism and hate crime charges in the death of a 66-year-old black man in New York.

The claim became more shocking when it emerged that Jackson had graduated from Friends, the 233-year-old private school on North Charles Street that embraces the Quaker principles of nonviolence and equality.
