School to investigate taunting of Native Americans by students
Source: NBC News
A Catholic archdiocese outside Cincinnati is investigating the actions of some of its high school students during the Indigenous Peoples March in Washington Friday.
Some students wearing Make America Great Again hats and clothing appeared to surround and may have taunted a Native American troupe as it performed the "American Indian Movement" song about strength and courage. It's not clear which of those young people surrounding the Native Americans are students of Covington Catholic High School in Covington, Kentucky. There appears to have been jeering by another group of people preceding the incident caught on video.
But the Diocese of Covington criticized any students who participated in the action, which broke out as a group from the school was in Washington for the anti-abortion event March for Life.
Its statement, forwarded by archdiocese spokeswoman Laura Keener, singled out Native American leader Nathan Phillips, a Vietnam War veteran and Omaha elder. In social media videos of the incident Phillips can be seen singing as a male taunts him smilingly and gets close to his face.

It is wonder that the students have not simply spoken out and said that they were inspired by the President.

(1,388 posts)Lets hope this can open their hearts and minds. The teachers in that school need to think long and hard about the culture that they are advancing.
Its funny how conservative religious practices of any religion share the trait of hate of the other".
Until human beings see that we are more alike than we can ever be different, we are doomed to see things like this. Science proves our commonality. Our differences must be shared and cherished. Fuck religious dogma.

(45,447 posts)makes me wonder what these kids are learning in school. The Pope came out against the wall and many Catholic churches have helped immigrants, in case anyone thinks this has to do with religion. It's about race, since many Latin American immigrants are Catholic.
But the wall really has jack shit to do with Native Americans.
And the "march for life" group really shouldn't be in conflict with people demonstrating for indigenous people's rights. The Native American group basically wants clean water, no oil pipelines running through their water supply adjacent to their land, and less police brutality.

(10,418 posts)But I know the area of the country where they are from, and it's somewhat socially conservative. You mix hatred with ignorance and you get shit like this: white people thinking anyone who is not white is to be hated.

And right up I 75 where the huge Jesus is.

(10,418 posts)Covington is basically a suburb of Cincinnati. Granted the further you get away from the big city centers in Ohio the more conservative it gets. That's why I say somewhat.

(17,984 posts)I was in Hamilton right before Christmas. Parts are booming but all the empty mills tell a sad story. We passed block after block.
There are small parts of Cincinnati down town that are Democratic.
Dayton has a Democratic Mayor, Nan Whaley. She has really brought the city back from all the losses. New companies, waterfront renewal. Huge new businesses down town.
But Warren, Miami to the North are all blood red. Montgomery is the Democratic oasis. And not all of it. I was surprised the wealthy areas voted for Obama.

(26,293 posts)religious schools have clearly had an impact on the country over the past 40+ years.
Unfortunately that impact is largely to the negative as we can see in this case.

(14,757 posts)They finish releasing every document and name related to those accused of sexual abuse within the church......
Oh, yeah, and after they fullly atone for the inquisition right up and through support of modern day dictators.
Otherwise, thoughts and prayers will have to hold you over. Oh, and press releases. Lots of those.

(15,805 posts)I've never seen a school sponsored trip where students were allowed to flaunt partisan political gear. As ambassadors from their school, the diocese, and the Catholic church didn't they get the standard pep talk to be on their best behavior and not cause any embarrassment?
Again, where were their adult monitors... Maybe they were instigating the confrontation and changing the focus from a religious event to a rally for Trump?

(2,412 posts)I used to teach at a Catholic School and they had a robust and thorough Social Justice Ciricullum.
The school may be trying to foster the best values. It is the families that encourage this behavior. As to the MAGA hats at the march, this should not be allowed on any field trip where students are representing a Catholic School. The Catholic Church is a big tent and not all there are child abusers. In Kentucky sending your kid to a Catholic School is a way to prevent your kids from attending an integrated public school. This is a filter. Some kids are at that school for that reason but not all.
