Second summit coming for North Korea's Kim Jong Un, US President Donald Trump

Source: DW

North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol met with President Donald Trump on Friday as the two sides worked to resume stalled efforts to end the North's nuclear weapons program by arranging a second summit with leader Kim Jong Un.

"President Donald J. Trump met with Kim Yong Chol for an hour and a half to discuss denuclearization and a second summit, which will take place near the end of February. The President looks forward to meeting with Chairman Kim at a place to be announced at a later date," White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

Kim Yong Chol held talks earlier with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

In a statement, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he welcomed the planned meeting between Trump and Kim, adding that it could be a "turning point" for achieving lasting peace on the Korean peninsula.

see the concessions and actions then give a summit to sign the final deal and shake hands
giving the world media summit and then trying to get a deal is totally backwards
Why does dump think he can buck convention?

Here's a statement concerning the posture of the US in the negotiations with North Korea he published in an article in Foreign Policy magazine earlier this month-

To begin, the administration should drop its maximalist demands that seek quick denuclearization and only promise sanctions relief when the last nuclear weapon has left North Korea. This plan stands almost no chance of being accepted by Pyongyang, and gives China, South Korea, and others the impression that the United States isn’t seriously interested in finding a solution. That’s bad for pressure, as the United States will be blamed if and when diplomacy fails. Instead, Washington should prioritize developing a roadmap with Pyongyang that lays out a step-by-step approach that provides rewards along the way commensurate with North Korean actions
