GOP blocks Senate rebuke of Trump on Russia sanctions
Source: Politico
A bipartisan attempt to condemn the Trump administration for relaxing Russia sanctions stalled in the Senate Wednesday after Republicans banded together to block the effort.
The bill would have formally rebuked the administration before it moves ahead with plans to lift sanctions on companies linked to oligarch Oleg Deripaska, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The bill needed 60 votes to advance to passage but fell three votes short this afternoon.
Eleven Senate Republicans joined Democrats in supporting the measure. They werent convinced by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchins argument that the sanctions should be lifted because the Russian firms had reorganized and had severed Deripaska's control.

(10,185 posts)So does the Russian mob get a free pass from the Treasury now? Are sanctions against little Putin's henchmen lifted or do they stay in place? Was this just a Rebuke or was it the actual sanction lifting vote?
And will Trump get patted on the head by Putin when next they meet?

The United States of America is now officially a vassal state of Russia, and we welcome and embrace their organized crime model of leadership. That's just great.
Thank you, Republican Party.

(3,256 posts)It means we need ten more votes. The only way we will get them is if those up for ree;ection get scared.

(17,390 posts)...so odd that Bernie would go out of his way to help a Russian oligarch given Bernie's history on Russia sanctions. This was a close vote, yet Bernie decided not to support the bill.
