Trump on shutdown: 'We'll be out for a long time'

WASHINGTON Staring down the next deadline to pay federal workers, the White House shifted tactics, trying to bypass House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to negotiate with rank-and-file lawmakers even as President Donald Trump dug in for a prolonged shutdown.
The House and Senate announced Tuesday they would stay in session, canceling an upcoming recess week at home if the shutdown continued, which seemed likely. On the shutdown's 25th day Tuesday, Trump did not move off his demand to have Congress provide $5.7 billion to build his promised border wall with Mexico. Democrats say they will discuss border security once the government has reopened, but Pelosi is refusing money for the wall they view as ineffective and immoral.
The president, on a conference call with supporters, showed no signs of backing down.
"We're going to stay out for a long time, if we have to," Trump said. "We'll be out for a long time."

(16,864 posts)The GOP will use this shutdown as an excuse to say "See, the government is clearly bloated and needs to be cut and can be cut without harm". Never mind the fact that many workers are continuing to work without pay!
not fooled
(5,801 posts)don't have any idea how much of the Federal government operates or what the Federal workforce does. Work is piling up and many of the negative consequences won't become apparent until some time has passed.
We have fools making these "decisions."

(12,586 posts)There was a joke when I growing up in the '50s: The Lone Ranger and Tonto are hiding behind a rock as an entire tribe of Indians surround them. "There's no way we will get out of this, Tonto." "What do you mean 'we,' white man?"
When Donnie Two Scoops says, "We're going to stay out for a long time," that joke came to mind. He's not part of "we." He is not suffering one iota from his actions. Other than not being able to fly down to Mar-A-Lago every weekend to play golf (and thus saving the American taxpayer millions of dollars), IQ45 has paid no price for his actions. By 2020 his base will have forgotten about the shutdown among cheers of "Lock her up!"
Kick him out of the WH and into a one bedroom apartment, take away the Secret Service, refuse to fly him anywhere in Air Force One, feed him cold hamberders and fries, don't pay the bill on his cell phone so he can't tweet -- let's make him suffer as much as the people whose lives he is ruining.
"There is no end to this in which you win. It's all on you," Tony Stark tells Loki in "The Avengers." "I have an army," Loki retorts. "We have a Hulk," says Stark calmly.
We have our own Hulk -- Nancy Pelosi.

(5,405 posts)It's a mess and Trump sees no way of backing down.
Those Republican voters who are affected by the Trump shutdown will by now realise that this bluff and bluster from the White House really does affect them where they live, and be less inclined to vote the same way next time.
If Trump backs down, he will just loose more votes, because he gave in to those horrible Democrats.
The only solution is for Trump to have a real (or pretend) physical and mental breakdown, and resign due to ill health. He can even say he wants to spend more time with his family. We can let him get away with that, surely?
He can let Pence and the rest of the Repub team try to clean up the mess.
(I can already hear cries from Repubs of 'It wasn't us, Trump made us do it!')
The people I really feel sorry for, are the Democrat voters caught short by the Trump shutdown.
But I'm guessing they already knew a long time ago Trump didn't have the interests of the average citizen at heart.
