De Blasio on 2020 bid: 'I never rule things out'

Source: The Hill

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) on Sunday said he is "focused on the job I have" but "never" rules out the possibility of running for president.

"You never know what life brings," de Blasio told CNN's "State of the Union."

"There's a lot of good candidates" for the Democratic nominee in 2020, he added. "There's not a consensus yet in our party. There is still, I think, a lack of recognition that if you have tens of millions of people hurt, we're not speaking to them. Donald Trump spoke to them."

He went on to say that then-candidate Trump during the 2016 election "was speaking to people's pain and challenges."

I spoke to Jumaane Williams last week, and he said the De Blasio in City Hall isn't the one he voted for. I think there's far less support for De Blasio than he imagines there is.

I'm really starting to wonder why people want to run when they have to know they do not have a chance. All the effort, all the money. Seriously, what makes people want to do this?

To a segment of the country. The angry white middle class male, for one. He tapped into a forgotten group. I think Russia put Trump in office, but there's no doubt that he got a ton of votes from that group.

Remember that Michael Moore warned about it before the election. He was seeing and hearing it firsthand in the Rust Belt.

He appealed to their base instincts, not their pain. And angry white males are not and never have been a "forgotten group". The "forgotten" rednecks are all around me so I'm quite familiar with what motivates them. Loss of white privilege and racism is not a "challenge". And I won't even address Michael Moore's BS.

It's the general consensus that Trump tapped into those guys that Moore was speaking about.

Personally, I don't know. But we can see them on tv and the net wearing MAGA hats. No one said it was a proper tapping into them, or that it was good. Moore made it clear...Trump was doing whistle calls, hitting the right tone, hitting the right notes. Talking to them. He was lying, but they were either too stupid to know, or they just wanted to believe.

You are free to have a different opinion. I personally don't know, but I do pay attention to the lone voice in the crowd who said Trump would win...and why.

And now he blames Hillary and Obama for Trump winning. And I see those hats you are talking about at the feed store every saturday. Theirs is not righteous anger.

I just think the Michael Moore/Bernie Sanders thing about winning back poor angry white males in the midwest is doomed from the start. I have lost a lot of friends over this over the past two years because this is the reality I live in. Not in a city and not on a coast but in the same place where you see NPR go to interview idiots in diners voting against their own interests. My meaningless opinion is that most of these people voted for Trump because they are angry and scared and they want a scapegoat for the loss of white privilege. Trump's approval stays at 40% no matter how embarrassing and ignorant he is because they identify with the worst parts of him. They love that anyone educated or open minded is shocked by him. You aren't getting the racists back by running a candidate that appeals to working class white guys. The thing Trump will always have over Joe Biden is he's a racist. On the bright side theres more of us than them... we just have to turn out.

.....unlike many who propose things like that, he's explained exactly where the money is coming from, and without raising taxes.

We'll see how that works out.
