TSA union: Some screeners have quit as shutdown stretches on
Source: Politico
Some TSA screeners have left the job since a government shutdown began and others are considering quitting if they don't get paid this week, a union that represents TSA agents said today.
The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents a chunk of TSA employees, said screeners were becoming increasingly panicked as the partial shutdown drags on, diminishing their chances of getting paid this Friday.
"Every day I'm getting calls from my members about their extreme hardships and need for a paycheck," said Hydrick Thomas, president of AFGE's TSA Council. "Some of them have already quit and many are considering quitting the federal workforce because of this shutdown."
He added that a wave of resignations could create "a massive security risk for American travelers" since TSA cannot hire new screeners during a shutdown.

(7,142 posts)There is very small airport near me in Pa. I travelled a lot for my company, I got to know all of the people who worked there. The girls who had to load my 70 pound tool box. Homeland security canned all of the people and replaced them with retired cops or whoever. Those people who worked at our airport could have been trained, didn't have to be fired. I felt safer with the people I knew because they were dedicated people not retirees working for some pin money. Just my 2 cents. I guess my point is not relevant but it still pisses me off.

(1,483 posts)I am sorry for the workers. Not sorry for TSA.
If HK and Changi can do without "The Security Theater Show" so can we.

(1,279 posts)With our DoD IDs my wife and I did not have any problem getting ours. You don't take off any clothes, but if you want to strip as a protest, that is legal under the first amendment. No small bottles in a baggie, any size in your carryon, computer and other electronics in your carryon. Just put your carryon on the conveyer belt to be scanned and walk through that people scanner. The lines are much shorter. No DoD ID, you can still get the TSA Pre.

(5,939 posts)Were all equal, but some are more equal than others. Wonder when the shoe thing is going to end - can you imagine fifty years from now - "take off your shoes, a kid tried to light his on fire once decades ago" As I said, total joke.

(45,503 posts)TSA should "randomly select" those politicians and treat them exactly like they treat a brown man or attractive woman. That would encourage republicans to march into Trump's office and end this nonsense.
