Trump Administration Freezes Raises for Pence and Cabinet Members
Source: NY Times
WASHINGTON The Trump administration announced late Friday night that it would freeze a pay raise for Vice President Mike Pence, members of the cabinet and other high-ranking political appointees in light of the partial government shutdown.
The high-level officials were positioned to receive a raise of about $10,000 a year which was to go into effect on Saturday as 800,000 federal employees were entering their third week without pay.
The increases were the result of Congresss failure to renew a longstanding freeze on raises for high-ranking officials and political appointees. An extension of the freeze was included in the spending bills funding multiple government agencies that were not acted on before the expiration on Thursday of the 115th Congress.
But on Friday night, the Office of Personnel Management announced that it would be prudent for agencies to continue to pay these senior political officials at the frozen rate until appropriations legislation is enacted that would clarify the status of the freeze.

Oops. The Trump appointees got caught just before the raises were implemented.

(11,495 posts)If there is a freeze then Pence and the others should NOT get a raise when the shut down is over. This seems to say it has to be "clarified" so they could still get it.

(4,166 posts)The shut down was implemented so the House and the Senate knew the freeze was due to expire. McConnell and Ryan both had to have ignored the expiration date thiinking it would slip by everyone.

(8,757 posts)Let's not forget that before the shutdown that this administration already froze planned COL pay increases for all federal employees. None of which would be $10,000 dollars. As a state faculty retiree in N.C., year after year we never got pay raises while state Government continued to vote themselves raises. We would get a paid day off, of which you could not use b/c classes had to be covered. The first day in office McCrury raised his and his staff pay by an average of 8,000 dollars. This is why I despise knuckle dragging republicunts so much, they are fine with this shit as long as they shout God, Guns And Gays.

(1,332 posts)They shouldn't get paid AT ALL until he shutdown is over. Not just the raise (which they don't deserve-I'm not even sure Pentecostal Pence is alive, everytime I see him I'm reminded of the movie, "Weekend at
Bernies", but none of them, reps or senators, should get a paycheck.

(11,519 posts)They should all go without a paycheck. Sure, it wouldn't hurt many of them very much, but just the optics of them being paid 6 figure salaries while regular people are expected to work without a paycheck is horrible. Hopefully more and more people who voted repub in the past have their eyes opened.
