Trump Referred to Shutdown as 'Strike' in Profanity-Laced Meeting With Democratic Leaders

Source: daily beast and Reuters

The president also dropped three f-bombs and claimed Democrats wanted him impeached.

01.04.19 7:55 PM ET

During Friday’s meeting at the White House over the ongoing shutdown standoff, President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) made little substantive progress as Pelosi and Schumer urged Trump to reopen the government by Tuesday, according to two people familiar with the meeting.

One of these knowledgeable sources told The Daily Beast President Trump kicked off the meeting with a rant lasting roughly 15 minutes that included his $5.6 billion demand for a border wall, and threatened that he was willing to keep the government closed for “years” if that’s what it took to get his wall. He also, unprompted, brought up the Democrats who want him impeached, and even blamed Pelosi for new Democratic congresswoman Rashida Tlaib saying at a party earlier this week that Democrats would impeach the “motherfucker” Trump. (It is unclear why Trump would think Pelosi was responsible for this.)
................................

Along with saying the word “fuck” at least three times throughout the meeting, the president bizarrely stated that he did not want to call the partial government shutdown a “shutdown,” according to the source. Instead, he referred to it as a “strike.” (Many of the federal employees affected by the weeks-long shutdown have been working without pay. That is essentially the opposite of a strike.)

During the course of this meeting, the Democrats in the room were visibly shaking their heads in exasperation. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was one of the Republicans in the room. He barely spoke, according to a source familiar with Friday’s meeting.

whereby workers want to work but aren't allowed to.
But this isn't a labor dispute; it's a debate over funding.
The Acting President* is ignorant, incurious and petulant.
Thanks--again--GOP voters!

Whether they want to work or not is immaterial, they are being forced to work without pay.

Regardless, Lord the shellacking Republicans are going to face when this starts being used in campaigns... sorry, not sorry.

The legal definition of a strike is: a work stoppage; a concerted refusal of employees to perform the work that their employer has assigned to them in order to force the employer to grant certain demanded concessions. [Further: it is illegal to attempt coercion or intimidation during the course of a strike. which he has bordered on at times.]

Additionally, federal employees are not permitted to strike.

Unlike you or I, she has a gavel. And she gon' use it too... teehee. I was in the shower when this townhall thingy happened with her. Apparently Joy Reid teed up a ball on the kerfluffle over a freshman congresswoman using the word motherfucker. Pelosi stepped up to the plate, knocked that little motherfucking nothingburger out of the park, then kneecapped Trump and his Republican defenders with the bat. I imagine Reid had a hard time containing her glee over Pelosi's responses, she is a professional.

This will be a fun year. Well, not for Trump...

Jan 2019

Because I don't understand how or why he would call it a strike other than to make the federal workers sound errant or obstinant, thus eliminating sympathy.

And he said the government could be shut down for YEARS??? Ooookay. I guess that would be right up until he was defeated in 2020 for shutting down the government.

On a more serious note, wtf is up with a delay in tax returns?!?

Fri Jan 4, 2019, 11:58 PM
Jan 2019

And beginning in February of every year, the IRS hires a boat-load of temporary (seasonal) CPAs to process all of the 1040 national returns. Now, because the tax laws change every year, these folks must attend the three-day seminar that the IRS puts on to bring them up to speed on the new provisions. IF there is a government shut down, that also means there is a hiring freeze, even for temporary (seasonal) hires. That translates into an inability of the IRS to get all of the necessary people in place that they need to process all of the tax returns. What they are doing is pre-emptively getting out ahead of the problem now by telling people that there will be a delay in processing tax returns and tax refunds.

Does that help ?

BTW,the TSA is way under staffed as it is. They have hundreds of unfilled positions, and it is all about the lousy pay as well as the threat of no paychecks that is the number one reason.

most of the workers he has put out of work are democrats!! If they weren't before, with any luck they will be now. After being screwed over by their own "leader" they will maybe finally wake up. Poor Chinless Mitch McConnell. Bet he wishes he had NOT taken all that Russian money, now his hands are tied. Paul Ryan thinks he is free and clear by not running for re-election. Not so fast, Eddie Munster. He will be hauled back, and charged too.
