New Start-Up Airline 'Moxy' Places Order for 60 Airbus A220-300 Jets

Source: Airline Geeks

A new start-up airline codenamed ‘Moxy’ has firmed up an order for 60 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. The order was made under a Memorandum of Understanding last year at the Farnborough Air Show.

The new low-cost airline, which is being led by the founder of JetBlue, David Neeleman, is aiming to fill a gap in the aviation market offering point-to-point flights between secondary airports and attempting to reduce travel times for travelers. Neeleman also founded Azul Brazilian Airlines and is an active member in the revival of TAP Air Portugal. Moxy has been set up with $100 million in capital.

...snip...

‘Moxy’ is aiming to launch operations in 2020. The airline will look to serve airports such as Burbank, Fort Worth, Providence and Trenton-Mercer Airport offering shuttle flights for business passengers with free WiFi and a more flexible, attractive flight schedule, according to the company.

The "Ryanair/EasyJet" model has so far remained unsuccessful in the US. Interesting to see if they can pull it off.

7. They are basically the larger version of the Challenger series I fly

The Challenger airframe was quite wide for a corporate jet which made expansion of the same basic design easier. The CRJ and Global are all based on the original Challenger series.

Coke bought them out last summer.

I tried it once when an acquaintance from Maine brought a bunch back with him to grad school. He passed it out at a party, and pretty much to a person we lined up at the sinks to rinse our mouths out. He laughed--and said there was a reason he handed it out in small plastic cups instead of just handing us each a can. (He liked Moxie.)

The only place you can get it around here, believe it or not, is the local hardware store...

4. They could buy cheap planes from the other discount airlines that went out of business

Anything is possible. If he founded JetBlue then he might know what he's doing.

Probably not much out there and what there is will certainly be mix and match which creates its own problems. It’s a lot more efficient for a nitch airline to center itself around a single platform. Makes maintenance and pilot training much simpler.

It would be great to have a good discount airline be successful. I like Southwest but many of the others are pretty bad.

I had a disappointing experience on Wow airlines recently where they had all sorts of extra charges, and now they're going out of business.

8. Maybe, but it's all about matching the aircraft to the mission

Evidently they think the new C series jets match their mission the best or it may be other jets which could work as well aren’t going to be available when they need them.

It’s just that Alliance already has FedEx and Amazon operating there, so they are better equipped to deal with scheduled airline service. Plus they have already invested quite a bit in infrastructure. Meacham has just turned into a GA airport and probably will remain so.
