AUGUSTA Gov.-elect Janet Mills will take the oath of office Wednesday in Augusta, becoming Maines 75th governor and the first woman to hold the chief executive position in the states nearly 200-year history.
Mills, a Democrat who has served as Maines attorney general since 2013, will be sworn in during a ceremonial legislative session slated to begin at 6 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center. She will succeed Gov. Paul LePage, a Republican who has served two terms in the Blaine House. LePage is not expected to attend tonights ceremony.
In keeping with the requirements of Maine law, Mills was formally notified that she had won the election by a special delegation of lawmakers chosen under a joint order of the Maine Senate and House. Mills met with the delegation in the State House rotunda on Wednesday afternoon, shaking hands and hugging several lawmakers from a group that included Republicans, independents and Democrats.
We will see you in a few hours, right? state Sen. Cathy Breen, D-Falmouth, asked the incoming governor. Youll see me in a few hours, Mills responded.

(2,606 posts)My wife wants to move to Maine and I was hoping we wouldn't have to go there with a right-wing nutjob as Gov.
When we get there I want to tell people who ask why we moved that I heard the state could use some more liberals.
