Trump says he would have made a 'good general' while trashing Mattis' service and claiming he really fired him

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he essentially "fired" former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, criticizing the outgoing defense chief's service in the Marine Corps and his two years leading the Defense Department.
"What's he done for me? How had he done in Afghanistan? Not too good," Trump said at a Cabinet meeting, according to Bloomberg News. "As you know, President Obama fired him, and essentially so did I," he explained to reporters, contradicting an earlier statement.

"I think I would've been a good general, but who knows," the president, who has not served in the military and sought five deferments to avoid being sent to Vietnam, further remarked.
Plans for Mattis to step down as the defense secretary were first announced in a presidential tweet that said the revered former Marine general was retiring.

I generally refuse to consider his insane rants worthy of attention. I want to refuse to think of him as newsworthy, period, unless he quits. This was too egregious to ignore. I hope his Cabinet secretaries remember to wash their hands before they leave the White House.

Trump Trashes Mattis After Exit: 'What's He Done for Me?'

* President says he thinks he would have been a good general
* Mattis issued searing letter after Trump's Syria decision
President Donald Trump disparaged just-departed Defense Secretary Jim Mattis at his first Cabinet meeting of the new year, criticizing management of the Afghanistan war and claiming he "essentially" fired the four-star general, who abruptly resigned last month.
Trump prefaced his comments Wednesday by saying Mattis had personally thanked him for helping secure $716 billion for national security in the current fiscal year. But then he quickly turned. ... "What's he done for me?" Trump said. "How had he done in Afghanistan? Not too good."
The president -- who was exempted from the draft during the Vietnam War over bone spurs -- added that U.S. generals have done a bad job in Afghanistan over nearly two decades and said that he thinks he "would've been a good general, but who knows."
Trump spoke during a Cabinet meeting in which Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan took part. Shanahan, speaking earlier, largely limited his comments to discussing the Pentagon's cooperation with the Department of Homeland Security on border issues.

(7,541 posts)but he might have a little problem with little things like not actually knowing how to read or knowing any history (military or otherwise). He might also have a problem with actually having to do what someone else (the Joint chiefs) tells him to do.

Before he was anywhere near the railroad tracks, at best he would have scored two down the middle report cards. passed over twice, then told to go away. At worse, he would have had an 'accident'.
Cowards and flap mouth company grades have a short military life span. At minimum they need a speaking acquaintance with reality.
Probably wouldn't have made out of boot.

Trump says he had a meeting about Iran and the Middle East with lots of good-looking generals: "Like from a movie. Better looking than Tom Cruise, and stronger."

(24,703 posts)and it basically says everything about how this idiot compartmentalizes his train of thought in everything......................
"What's he done for me?
"How had he done in Afghanistan?
"Not too good,"
First of asshole..................you have men and woman in uniform that work for me and 350 million other people and its about country first, instead of putting yourself in the first person bull shit all of the time .................
Two..........again asshole..................it should be "what" instead of "how".............no wonder you are a fucking loser and failure, you have no concept of properly using the basic structure of sentence composition...................
And third.................showing your true self in your megalomaniac fashion on how you treat someone that was in the military while you were off playing fucking tennis with bone spurs and defrauding the tax payers in New York while Mattis was in combat tours...........
Your still a perverted asshole in a criminal enterprise.........................that broke the law(s), and we are coming for you, January 3, 2019 is tomorrow...............maybe you should heed this...................

I am pleased that the House of Representatives will be changing the name of our Committee to better reflect our true jurisdiction, which covers both government and the private sector. In the upcoming session of Congress, we will investigate waste, fraud, and abuse in the Trump Administration, and we will also examine many other issues that affect the American people every day, such as the escalating prices of prescription drugs that are negatively impacting families across the country and the opioid crisis that is devastating our communities. I am also heartened that our new acronym will now reflect the fact that oversight is one of Congress core responsibilities under the Constitution.

His men would follow him anywhere, but only out of curiosity.
He demonstrates the unique ability to demotivate soldiers a a moment's notice.
I know of no national emergency that would justify promoting this officer above his current grade.
When he opens his mouth, it seems that this is only to change whatever foot was previously in there.
This officer has delusions of adequacy.
This officer should go far, and the sooner he starts, the better.
This man is depriving a village somewhere of its idiot.
Since my last report, he has reached rock bottom and has started to dig.
Donated his brain to science before he was done using it.
So dense light bends around him.
Works well when under constant supervision and cornered like a rat in a trap.

In all seriousness, the Honor Code of every officer training course is very simple: "A cadet will not lie, cheat or steal, or tolerate those who do." Trump is four-for-four on violating that shit. His cadre would have had to go downtown and buy a drum to use at his expulsion from the Corps of Cadets.

(50,559 posts)On his first assignment, his new battalion commander would have taken one look at him and given him some low-level job that no one could possibly fuck up. Battalion Motor Maintenance Officer is a popular one - motor maintenance is an important duty, but the MMO is there to sign papers; the Battalion Motor Sergeant runs the motor pool.
The beauty of the MMO job in this case: having it in your Officer Record Brief is an encrypted message to anyone unlucky enough to have you fall into their laps, and the message is "this guy is the worst fuckup we had in the battalion at the time, give him a real job at your own peril."

(3,922 posts)A young person who's a child of some friends of ours was stuck in a future quandary of what to become when he grew up - and the time to grow up was rapidly passing.
One day he said to his Mom, "I want to be an Nurse Anesthetist". So Mom dutifully called my spouse, a Nurse for many years who was, at the time, a professor of Nursing.
My wife explained that he would have to actually become a Nurse first, before going on to a specialty.
"You mean, clean shit?" he said.
Well, not necessarily but that could be part of the job, she replied.
I'm reminded of that incident with the #IPOTUS's comments today - he could have been a general - as long as he didn't have to actually be a soldier first.
