Sen. Amy Klobuchar to decide soon on presidential bid

Source: Minneapolis Star-Tribune

WASHINGTON — Sen. Amy Klobuchar said Wednesday that she is “getting close to a decision” about running for president in 2020.

“I’m continuing to talk to people about it,” the Minnesota Democrat said in an interview in her U.S. Senate office, a day ahead of the start of a new congressional term. She said those discussions have been with a handful of longtime political advisers in Minnesota, some fellow U.S. senators, and others.

Klobuchar, who was elected to a third six-year Senate term in November, said if she does run that her presidential campaign would be headquartered in Minnesota. Her likeliest strategy would be to win or finish strongly in neighboring Iowa, with its nation-leading presidential caucus on Feb. 3, 2020.

Klobuchar declined to put an exact timeline on when she’d reveal her plans. But she acknowledged that the likelihood of a large Democratic field vying to challenge President Donald Trump means she can’t wait too long.

I think she’ll be a great candidate. She’s sharp as hell and won’t be pushed around by around. She can handle it.

She’s a calming force, a methodical questioner in hearings, and a knowledgeable and empathetic leader.

I sat down and considered the best options for the 2020 ticket given the loss of the firewall states. She was the name that came out.

I think she must be on the ticket - either as President or VP. I will vote for her at the caucus and of course back whoever gets the nomination.

Someone like her and Cory Booker/Beto O'Rourke/Andrew Gillum would make for a good ticket.

my choice was Amy Klobuchar.

There is some great talent in the Democratic Party for the 2020 nomination. Picking one above the others was not easy.

So, provided Klobuchar runs and nothing else too catastrophic happens, I am so far planning to stand up for Klobuchar next year.

So that sets her apart.

But she's an unknown, like so many of the Senators. So...I don't know.

I was impressed watching her during the frat boy's hearings. Admittedly I don't know much else about her. What is the typical repuke response to her?

Republican businesses funded her campaign rather than her opponent's. She's very well-liked statewide. I'd love to see her run.

For all the reasons stated by everyone upthread: smart, serious, tough (tougher than you think*)Midwestern sensibility, humane and likable, non-polarizing demeanor, and did NOT sign that letter asking Al Franken to resign. Plus she was very impressive in the Kavanaugh hearings: tough, but not showboating. Also: old enough to have accumulated experience and wisdom, but young enough to represent a newer generation.

*As another impressive Minnesota Democrat, Arvonne Fraser, reportedly said: "Don't mess with Minnesota nice."
If she's in, I'm in.
