After former Republican candidate for president (and Senator-elect for the state of Utah) Mitt Romney blasted President Donald Trump in an op-ed published on Tuesday evening, some in the Republican Party felt it was necessary to throw shade back at him including his own niece, Ronna McDaniel, who is the current head of the RNC.
In his opinion piece published in the Washington Post, Romney took aim directly at the president for failing to be the leader this nation needs, noting that the Trump presidency made a deep descent in December after a spate of resignations and other gaffes.
To a great degree, a presidency shapes the public character of the nation, Romney added. A president should unite us and inspire us to follow our better angels.'
RNC Chair Rhona Romney responded:
POTUS is attacked and obstructed by the [mainstream] media and Democrats 24/7, McDaniel wrote. For an incoming Republican freshman senator to attack @realdonaldtrump as their first act feeds into what the Democrats and media want and is disappointing and unproductive.

(59,504 posts)While it is true that he is a freshman Senator, he also was a Governor and the party's Presidential nominee. His stature in the the Senate may be mostly defined by seniority - which he has none of - but his stature in the country is a function of everything in his past. This would be as if a DNC head would have called Hillary Clinton an incoming freshman Senator in January 2001 without giving her name if she questioned a top Democrat. While technically true, neither were/are your average "freshman Senator".

(15,286 posts)Romney is instantly going to have the most stature of anyone in the Senate GOP. As you said, before Trump he was the leader of the Republican Party. He is still the leader of the "establishment" faction of the the GOP and will become the leader and ally of those "establishment" Rs like Collins, Murkowski, Gardener, Alexander, McCain's replacement, maybe a couple others. I think he will be the defacto co-majority leader of the Senate and make McConnell's job much harder now that that the "centrists" have a real counterweight to Trump they can get behind and not be scared.
Schumer would be wise to befriend Romney immediately. Between the both of them, they will control enough votes to set the agenda.
