WASHINGTON D.C. police are investigating the death of a U.S. Marine who was shot and killed Tuesday morning at the Marine Barracks Washington as an apparent accident.
The Marine was shot around 5 a.m. while he was on duty inside the barracks on Capitol Hill. It was not a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Marine Corps spokesman Chief Gunnery Sgt. John Jackson confirmed to WTOP. Police said it appeared that a gun accidentally discharged.
Police said they are treating the fatal shooting as a death investigation, and added that there are no criminal charges being investigated at this point.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the Marines name has not yet been made public. There was no threat to local residents, the Marine Corps said in a news release.
The commands priorities are to take care of the Marines family and friends, said Col. Don Tomich, the barracks commanding officer, in the release. We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time.

(28,941 posts)I'm inclined to question all the information. No such rank as Chief Gunnery Sergeant.
Also, wth were they doing with a loaded gun in quarters? The last I heard that will get the UCMJ dropped on your head because FUs like this could happen.
Yup, another PR FU.

(4,066 posts)I thought weapons had to be in the armory and were not allowed in the barracks? Did I just dream that up or is it the case only for weapons other than small firearms like pistols?

Edit: the entire complex is called "The Barracks", not just the residential areas.

The Marine who was shot and killed in what appeared to be a negligent discharge at the barracks in Washington D.C. has been identified, in an incident his commander called a "terrible loss."
Lance Cpl. Riley S. Kuznia, 20, was named by the Marine Corps as the individual who died at the barracks early Tuesday morning.
"We are truly saddened by this terrible loss. Riley was a highly driven and goal-oriented Marine whose positive attitude set the example here at the Barracks," Col. Don Tomich, commanding officer of Marine Barracks, said in a statement Wednesday.
The investigation is ongoing, but local police have classified the case as a death investigation rather than a homicide investigation, meaning that it may have been an accident.
The Marine, assigned to Marine Barracks Washington, was shot at approximately 5 a.m.
