Disinformation campaign targeting Roy Moores Senate bid may have violated law, Alabama attorney general says
By Craig Timberg and Tony Romm December 27 at 1:17 PM
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said Thursday that his office is exploring whether disinformation tactics deployed against Republican Roy Moore during last years special election violated state campaign laws and said he was worried that the operation could have affected the closely fought Senate race.
The information is concerning, Marshall, a Republican, said in a phone interview. The impact it had on the election is something thats significant for us to explore, and well go from there.
Moore lost the election to his Democratic rival, Sen. Doug Jones.
Marshall, who said he learned of the disinformation campaign called Project Birmingham through news reports over the past two weeks, stopped short of announcing a formal investigation but said his office was beginning to gather information about the effort.

(521 posts)Roy Moore had a track record that worked against him, so I am curious (and surprised) that anyone anywhere thought it necessary to cook up fictions in order to defeat him.
Would someone please articulate what was the disinformation that was published against him.

(48,955 posts)That's it. I think they created fake accounts that were supposed to appear to be Russian bots supporting Moore. Seriously, from all I can tell - that is the fakery/social media manipulation.
On the one hand - its good the story is coming out. The better we understand the levels and types of misinformation the more we can deal with it.
On the other hand - it stretches believably that the reason Jones would get some votes would be based on the impression that online russian bots were pushing for Moore. There were plenty of reasons to not vote for Moore. The allegations of predation upon young women/girls; Being kicked off the State Supreme Court twice; Sham self-funding Foundation, etc. But the appearance of Russian bots would tip votes? Come on Alabama AG.

(6,011 posts)under 100% Federal jurisdiction and supervision. No State legislatures, Secretaries of State, political parties, or Local election boards would have any say in how the election is conducted, or counted. I have been harping on this for years. Let's get this done.
