MSNBC Beats Fox In Key Ratings For First Time In 17 Years

Source: The Hill

By Emily Birnbaum, 1 hr. ago. MSNBC beat out Fox News last week in key ratings for first time in 17 years, topping its competitors in total average viewers for the first time since 2000, according to a news release from MSNBC.
MSNBC averaged 1,558,000 total viewers during the "sales day" (6 a.m. to 2 a.m.) between Dec. 17-21, while Fox News averaged 1,541,000 total viewers. CNN, meanwhile, averaged 975,000.

Among people between the ages of 25 and 54, a key demographic for cable news networks, MSNBC also finished the week as the No. 1. In prime time (8 p.m. to 11 p.m.), MSNBC continued to lead Fox News and CNN in total viewers and among that key age group for the fourth week in a row.

MSNBC prime time last week averaged 2,578,000 total viewers, compared to Fox's 2,240,000 and CNN's 1,398,000. Of those viewers, 471,000 thousand were between the ages of 25 and 54 for MSNBC, while 355,000 were in that demographic for Fox and 415,000 for CNN. This number among the 25-54 age group was a significant drop for Fox, which typically leads the pack.

The latest data means MSNBC could be on track to top Fox News in prime time for the month of December. "The Rachel Maddow Show" by Dec. 21 was the top-rated program across all cable news networks, with her show "Maddow" averaging 3,213,000 total viewers. -END-

Social Security
Medicare

etc

All the fucking things they wanna get rid of and all the fucking things that people like us helped get made into law...

Clinging to their guns and religion. Where have I heard that before...

I never been madder at the Republican Party in my lifetime. I have voted before for some republicans. Never Ever again. Cowards and more concerned about their jobs than their country. Trump has neutered them all.

For republicans it's always party over country, party over the law, party over common human decency....party over everything! That's not supposed to be the way you run a country for the benefit of all people.

And a belated welcome to Democratic Underground, saljr1! I hope you feel at home here, join in, and let your voice be heard. We have a butt-load of work to do, fixing everything Trump has ruined in his almost 2 years as "preznit", but we can handle it. He's trying his damnedest to destroy our country, but we'll persist and prevail. We'll have a government that works for everyone, whether the republicans like it or not.

But I can't understand why Comcast, which owns NBC Universal, doesn't offer MSNBC as part of its basic cable package. Most Comcast customers would still get expanded basic because of local sports, etc, that aren't offered on basic.

from what I know. I wish MSNBC would discuss issues of labor, climate change and the environment, govt. regulation and consumer safety but they have to be mindful of large, corporate advertisers- the last owner was GE/General Electric. Same for bundling/lowering costs to gain a wider audience; if after all this time they haven't, who knows.

They have a good line up of talented hosts-- Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, Lawrence O'Donnell, Joy Reid and others, and moderate Republicans JoeScar, Nicole Wallace, Steve Schmidt (Hugh Hewitt, Michael Steele, Greta VS). Overall we're fortunate to have them considering the growth of far right wing messaging and its enormous funding.

https://www.salon.com/2018/04/15/is-msnbc-going-conservative-supposedly-liberal-news-network-loves-nevertrumpers-more-than-leftists/ -Opinion, Snips

(Salon, 2017) "In the wake of Donald Trump’s election in 2016, MSNBC had at least two clear options: It could respond to a swelling progressive viewer base by moving left, or it could keep playing the Beltway game and move right, loading up with #NeverTrump Republicans and dumping actual progressives. In choosing the latter — albeit with a head-fake — the news channel has significantly skewed its coverage, to the detriment of progressive politics and its own viewers.

In fact, the idea that MSNBC is a “liberal Fox News” fundamentally misunderstands both the media environment and recent network history. Fox News is a deliberately ideological propaganda station, conceived as such by Roger Ailes long before it ever went live. MSNBC is a commercial enterprise that stumbled into a center-left position simply because that was the available audience, given Fox News' and CNN’s prior positioning. But no one master-planned it that way."
