Source: Arizona Republic

U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl will resign from the U.S. Senate on Dec. 31, The Arizona Republic has confirmed, setting up a second appointment by Gov. Doug Ducey to the seat once occupied by the late John McCain.

Ducey is required under law to name another Republican to the seat. A replacement to the Senate seat "will be announced in the near future," according to the Governor's Office.

Kyl wrote a letter dated Dec. 12 to Ducey, informing him of his resignation. The letter was hand-delivered to the Governor's Office late Thursday afternoon.

"Thank you for appointing me to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy created by John McCain's death," Kyl wrote. "It has been an honor and a privilege to again serve the people of Arizona.

as at least part of the reason she lost a close election. And, Gov. Ducey is a spineless weasel who always bows to the Benjamins.

Damn it all. We could have elected a proper senator to that seat by the citizens of AZ instead of being appointed by an idiot Ducey.
McCain died in August.

I am so pissed. I know it will be McSally. She graciously accepted defeat and only because I'm sure, she knew she'd get that seat anyway.

Fuck Kyl. damn it

You don't quit the senate with 2 weeks notice.

Had he resigned in May there would’ve been a special election in November. But he held off on resigning and allowed Ducey to appoint for two years...

election loss I was further convinced that Ducey would appoint her. However, since that time McSally has been publicly nasty even to some republican leaders leading me to believe that she was officially told she was not in the running to replace McCain. AZ is a red state and to appoint a woman kind of goes against the Republican creed.

He'll appoint someone who won't run in 2020 so he'll be able to run for it himself.
