Trump meets with Chris Christie to discuss chief of staff role
Source: Axios
President Trump met with Chris Christie on Thursday evening and considers him a top contender to replace John Kelly as chief of staff, according to a source familiar with the presidents thinking.
Hes tough; hes an attorney; hes politically-savvy, and one of Trumps early supporters."
Behind the scenes: Trump has met with a couple of others, but the way hes discussed Christie to confidants make them think hes serious. His legal background may come in handy next year.
Between the lines: Christie is used to being a principal, and its unclear how hell handle playing second fiddle. Also, he is not a friend of the Kushners. (As U.S. attorney for New Jersey, Christie sent Jareds father to prison.)

(48,955 posts)Because it would be smarter to pick Christie than Jared - so he does the opposite thing.
Christie - as flawed as he is - understands the political process. Jared just understands self-interest.
That said - either pick will inevitably facilitate the collapse of this fiasco of a WH/Presidency.

(54,770 posts)can turn it around. I gave up long ago HOPING trump would somehow try to do better. But, really that is his only hope.
If -- and it is a YOUG IF -- somehow he improves his image, Christie will take credit. trump will bow out of 2020, and Christie will run.
I think I'm having a nightmare.

(54,770 posts)an alternative, unless they are just resigned to leave office in disgrace (Christie needs one more chance at politics).
trumps best, and perhaps only, chance of getting out of this is getting more people to believe hes doing a decent job. I think its too late, and hes too stupid, hateful, and destined to be the brunt of jokes for a hundred years, but thats his only chance.

Not my preference, but what I think the odds are of anything happening to trump other than being ruined and shamed.

(3,426 posts)Will Chris Christie get the last laugh? (Opinion)
With Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff, Nick Ayers, declining to serve as the new minder for President Donald Trump (known in some quarters as Individual-1), the new game in Washington seems to be a version of hot potato. The effort to fill the job has led to the ironic, if perhaps unlikely, possibility that former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whom Trump has disrespected in the past, might be asked to fill the post.
One after another, other potential candidates for White House chief of staff are saying, "Don't look at me," and it's becoming clear that Trump has degraded the value of yet another element of the national power structure.
Previously held by the likes of James Baker III and Leon Panetta, the job that John Kelly will vacate at the end of this month has traditionally been regarded as one of the most important in the world. Chiefs have generally enjoyed more engagement with the president than anyone else on his staff. So, if Kelly's role is vacant in the new year, it would be a problem.
As President, and previously as a New York businessman, Trump has been the kind of boss whom accomplished, self-possessed men and women would learn to avoid. A bully with a penchant for wild claims and ethically dubious schemes, he has a tendency to bring out the worst in those around him.
To cut to the chase the bottom line ! the full article at link
One might think that Christie would answer speculation about his coming to the White House with a New Jersey-style "fuggedaboutit." However, by letting the idea breathe he may actually be putting himself in a no-lose situation: If he waits for an actual offer, he can reclaim his dignity by turning it down, or he can take it and create the appearance that Trump needs him for political survival.
Who would have thought that as Trump turned the chief of staff's job into a kind of booby prize he was also empowering Chris Christie? No one did. But with this most-unlikely President, such a bizarre turn makes a perverse kind of sense.

(115,829 posts)he hates Christie, who as US Attorney in NJ sent his father to prison, and so might quash the whole idea. And although Christie is a major douche, he's never been accused of being stupid - so is he desperate enough for a WH job to walk into that snake pit? Is he arrogant enough to think he can save Trump from himself?

(29,098 posts)If he can't control Trump in short order he will compile the info to bring to Congress. Christie could turn this into a Win Win either way. For someone so out in the weeds in the Party.....He really has few options to get back in the game. Christie is always out for Christie but if he could come out smelling like a rose doing something "good" he can only benefit I doubt Trump will offer him the job though. This interview and release of the info is all for show. He gets to fuck with Kushners head for a bit and it makes Trump look less desperate.

(3,426 posts)Thing of it is ,Christie considers himself a master at political maneuvering. Many believe and have believed all along that Trump will not finish out one term. Christie no doubt is of that particular belief. And as it is, things are looking pretty bad for Trump as his past and present misdeed's are catching up to him. Trump's first choice for replacement c.o.s. Pence's guy is interesting because Trump doesn't trust Pence and would like to know everything his guy knows about Pence's secret agenda. lol.
Christie would like Pence's job before the elections in view of his belief Trump will resign. Speculation indeed ,but fact is Christie is a dirty dog. And the only way into the oval office he can see is through the back door, same back door Trump exits out of.
On the flip view, the political climate has fallen out of republican favor and with a 20 year history with Trump,Christie may be seeing the writing on the wall. Declining would simply be saving face even though he has not face because he lost it.

(14,176 posts)lol. Christie gets the last laugh (though never in front of his master). Trump toyed with him early on with rumours of him as his running mate, you could tell he loved watching Christie skirm in moments like this, before crushing his dreams and telling him to f off. But they always crawl back.
I'm watching the Netflix series The Exorcist. If there were real possessed people they'd look a lot like these sycophants. Character is very low on their priority list for themselves, or who they work for to gain wealth or power.
