Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, is sentenced to three years in prison for 'dirty deeds'

Source: USA Today

NEW YORK – Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to a series of crimes, including campaign finance violations, tax evasion and lying to Congress.

Cohen, known for several years as Trump’s fixer in legal and business matters, has become the first member of the president’s inner circle to be sentenced to prison in a case with potential legal implications for the president. Cohen’s sentencing comes after he pleaded guilty in cases with prosecutors in the Southern District of New York and with special counsel Robert Mueller’s team.

Before the sentence was imposed, Cohen said he took "full responsibility" for the crimes, "for each act that I pled guilty to: The personal ones to me and those involving the President of the United States of America."

He said "blind loyalty" to Trump "led me to take a path of darkness instead of light."

Think about it, Cohen has until March to reduce his sentence even more. If he wants a shorter sentence he needs to spill some more goodies on Trump and the crime family. If I were Cohen I'd be on the phone to Mueller now.

Cohen is not a risk to the community, so they’ll give him a little while to get his affairs in order. He has to put his stuff in storage and give his dog away, and it’s just gentlemanly they’d let him do that.

when they are not a violent offender and have been out on bond throughout their trial and sentencing.

Sometimes a judge will give the defendant even longer if there is an appeal (which won't be the case here). For example, Cong. William Jefferson was convicted in August 2009, sentenced in November 2009, and ultimately given until May 2010 to report to prison.

It's enough that's it's not a Papadapo-like slap on the wrist, but will still let him return to his family in a reasonable amount of time since he cooperated. Plus it takes him out of circulation long enough that his absence is noteworthy; he's not going to start right back up as a consultant on FOX. He's not a direct threat to anyone.

he'll be out in half of his original sentence for "good behavior". If he can possibly remember what he was like before he first ran into Donald Trump he might have a chance to redeem himself. It sounds as if he's serious and honest about his contrition. Maybe not.

It's difficult to find commonality in our justice system. Certain people get targeted and harassed unfairly; sometimes they experience violence or death. Others get a slap on the wrist.

With respect to Cohen, let's separate his cases from the broader societal perspective. The reason to sentence him this way is because Cohen can still provide much information to the ongoing investigations. Additionally, Cohen faces a lot more legal jeopardy. His troubles aren't over by a long shot. There is a lot more information he can offer Robert Mueller and other investigators.

Meanwhile, the black teen in your scenario doesn't have that leverage.

As I wrote, it sucks. It's also grossly unfair.

In fact, it's un-American.
