Justice Department charges four in its first Panama Papers case

Source: Marketwatch

The Department of Justice on Tuesday announced charges against four people relating to the Panama Papers investigation. The Justice Department charged Ramses Owens, Dirk Brauer, Richard Gaffey and Harald von der Goltz with wire fraud, tax fraud, money laundering, and other offenses in connection with their roles in what was called a decades-long criminal scheme perpetrated by Mossack Fonseca & Co. Brauer was arrested in Paris, von der Glotz in London and Gaffey in Medfield, Mass., while Owens remains at large. Owens is a 50-year-old Panamanian attorney, Brauer is a 54-year-old German investment manager for Mossfon Asset Management, Gaffey is a 74-year-old U.S.-based accountant and von der Glotz is an 81-year-old German who also was formerly a U.S. resident.

Malta car bomb kills Panama Papers journalist

The journalist who led the Panama Papers investigation into corruption in Malta was killed on Monday in a car bomb near her home.

Daphne Caruana Galizia died on Monday afternoon when her car, a Peugeot 108, was destroyed by a powerful explosive device which blew the vehicle into several pieces and threw the debris into a nearby field.

A blogger whose posts often attracted more readers than the combined circulation of the country’s newspapers, Caruana Galizia was recently described by the Politico website as a “one-woman WikiLeaks”. Her blogs were a thorn in the side of both the establishment and underworld figures that hold sway in Europe’s smallest member state.

Her most recent revelations pointed the finger at Malta’s prime minister, Joseph Muscat, and two of his closest aides, connecting offshore companies linked to the three men with the sale of Maltese passports and payments from the government of Azerbaijan.

Maybe, someday, there will be justice for Daphne.

They got the accountants, not the people who they were laundering the money for. Too much trouble to pull over their corporate jets, or drag them off their yachts.

The journalist who was assassinated for her duty to her profession in pursuing the truth of the Panama Papers is also a journalist. I have every belief she had made arrangements to make her information available to other trusted sources, knowing her life was undoubtedly in peril with this bunch of vampires. From your 2nd link, at the Guardian:

The data was obtained by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung and shared with media partners around the world, including the Guardian, by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in Washington.

Caruana Galizia’s son, Matthew Caruana Galizia, is a journalist and programmer who works for the ICIJ.

There's every chance in the world the people who managed this assassination can be traced starting with Miami, not far away at all. Miami has had a deep involvement with car bombs, C-14 since the 1960's, at the beginning of the invasion and occupation of Miami by the landed, wealthy, racist radical right-wing original "exiles" who "fled" Cuba at the end of the Revolution. Car bombs. Their own bombers have bombed and murdered people they consider "enemies" to right-wing interests all over the world, even on a Washington street in broad daylight when they assassinated a Chilean diplomat who had been tortured by Pinochet, along with his American assistant, Ronnie Moffit, and her husband.

Miami! (Used to be the largest CIA base in the world.)

Thank you, so much, UpInArms. This is a story the world needs to end with complete justice. We do wait with baited breath.

In fact the investigations have developed a wonderful database of linkages that is commonly used to practice investigative journalism.

ICIJ: https://www.icij.org/investigations/panama-papers/explore-panama-papers-key-figures/

Some graph info: https://medium.com/@lyonwj/graph-visualization-of-panama-papers-data-in-neo4j-9c08ca17039c

It is getting harder but not impossible for malfaisants to escape public scrutiny.

In 2005 there was one Chinese restaurant in the town of West Yellowstone, now there are at least eight. There are several Chinese owned motels now and the Chinese almost exclusively stay at those. Then there are the resorts they've been buying with cash in fist, for millions. It's kind of a free for all for high end real estate around here. Put that together with the greedy Americans and you've got nothing but housing that only the most wealthy can afford, even to rent for a week and the help have no place to stay if the come to work. Some think they will be able to buy parts of the park eventually too.

Of course, with the current republican crop they are all usually almost that nasty any more.

Couldn't get any lower than Zinke, for sure, and Gianforte is a pompous, vicious ass. Didn't know that area is his domain. The country can kiss it all goodbye, apparently. Shameful.

Tester is the one we can rely on and our Governor, a Dem. The other Senator is a former business partner of Gianforte so...

Hope we can fix that soon. We only get one Rep. since we're only a little over a million pop.

Most folks don't realize it but three of the five entrances to YNP are in the State of Montana.

Even in my remote neck of the northern forests I've been seeing dramatic drops in insects and birds. Just in the last 5-10 years.

Most of the people named in the Panama Papers think that these effects are for the "others". They'll also pay the price, maybe a few years later.

Who Ordered The Car Bomb That Killed Maltese Journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia?

The last time Matthew Caruana Galizia saw his mother alive, she was going to the bank.

A government minister had gotten the courts to freeze her bank accounts. She intended to fight for access to her funds.

"If someone tried to shut her up, if someone tried to stop her, she'd just fight back even harder," the son says. "That was her spirit."

Daphne Caruana Galizia was an investigative reporter, a towering, intense mother of three, digging up dirt on the most powerful figures in Malta, the European Union's smallest member state.

. . .

Caruana Galicia asked uncomfortable questions about alleged fuel smuggling, organized crime and the sale of Maltese passports, which allow free movement through the EU.

She dug into money laundering and fraud allegations at Pilatus Bank, run by Ali Sadr Hasheminejad, who is facing criminal prosecution in the United States. She combed through the leaked law firm records known as the Panama Papers and found offshore wealth tied to the Maltese prime minister's inner circle.

"They wanted to shut her up," says her 52-year-old sister Corinne Vella. "She obviously spoke truth to power. That was threatening to people in power."

Vella, tall and intense like her sister, meets with NPR at a fountain outside the presidential palace's flowering gardens. She's frustrated that the very institutions her sister was investigating are now in charge of finding her killers.

Assange, Snowden and Greenwald were absolutely jizzing themselves over the Panama Papers when they were first announced because they just KNEW Hillary's financial smoking gun was going to be in them...

...And when it wasn't (and ironically people from Putin's inner circle were the biggest names revealed), all thee "transparency activists" instantly began to dismiss/ignore the leaks and in Assange's case he actually worked to *discredit* them fully...
