DETROIT (AP) Michigan clears a threshold this week as the first state in the Midwest to allow marijuana for more than just medical purposes. In the Nov. 6 election, voters by a wide margin endorsed recreational use by adults who are at least 21. The move comes 10 years after voters approved marijuana to alleviate the effects of certain illnesses. Many supporters believe that decadelong experience, as well as similar legalization efforts in other states, led to victory at the ballot box.
"It's certainly going to smell like freedom," starting Thursday, said Detroit lawyer Matt Abel, who specializes in marijuana law and whose office sign says, "cannabis counsel."
Eleven states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana. Of course, there are many caveats in Michigan and already some tension.
Michigan and already some tension.
HOW MUCH?
Michigan residents who are 21 or older can possess or transport up to 2.5 ounces (70.8 grams) of marijuana. They can grow up to 12 plants, although not in public view. They also can give 2.5 ounces (70.8 grams) to another person, but not for payment.

(6,230 posts)Folks in Michigan will not be able to buy it until 2020. You can have it, use it and grow it. Of course the Lame Duck legislature (repub + outgoing repub governor) are doing all they can to hurt the bill. They want to eliminate average folks growing it. Also they are trying to take away power from the newly elected Dems - Governor, Attorney General & Secretary of State - All Women! I abhor repubs.

(6,230 posts)we here in Michigan can't buy it until 2020 and the current lame duck repub legislature is trying to get rid of the part where we can grow it. It's not all good right now.

(29 posts)right now, from what i am hearing, in order to amend or change this, the republicans will need 3/4's majority in both houses. the senate leader(who's a grade A jackass) has a super majority in the senate but not enough to have 3/4's so this is not going thru!
also since there's no retail sales until 2020, there's nothing stopping someone from setting up a grow tent and 600-1000w lamp. seeds you can buy from us based breeders.

(2,901 posts)I simply want the ability to cultivate for personal adult use without throwing civil asset forfeiture into the equation for cultivating cannabis.
Why are we dragging this out state by state.
Just implement policy at the federal level and be done with it.

(32,698 posts)For the most part they don't nail people that get a few seeds in the mail. They want the ones that send them. Some shops or care takers will sell you a few cuttings to start with.
Get a High Times or other magazine and find lots of ads to choose from.

We are waiting for Illinois here in St. Louis. Going East Side will take on a whole new meaning. (Actually, only a slightly new meaning...it will still be Party Time on the Ill side).

But were going to have a Republican State Senate for the next two years. There werent regular elections for State Senate this year. It was a good for Democratic candidates in MN and Im sure we would have elected a Democratic State Senate if we had gotten the chance.
