Roads worsen in KC with winter storm; highways closed in Kansas and Missouri
Source: Kansas City Star
Road conditions in the Kansas City area became treacherous Sunday with snow and ice from a major winter storm that descended on the region.
Highways in the Kansas City area were snow-packed by early afternoon and conditions were expected to get worse later in the day, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol
...snip...
Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer issued a State of Disaster Emergency declaration for the winter storm. Kansas officials urged people to stay off the roads.
Drivers were told not to try to go west because they would be turned around. Those headed east into Kansas were being stopped at the Colorado border.

(34,109 posts)looks like this or worse. Power has been iffy so it is difficult to know much more than what is going on here.
I may end up walking to the barn, I was there late so do not have to go up for a while. All the roads, both county and city and the highways are terrible and snow packed or closed entirely. It does not look as bad as they say, I may be in for a big surprise!

(34,109 posts)Yesterday here it was jeans and a thermal shirt and just fine like that. We got some ice before the snow came then ice on top of the drifts. Pretty nasty. So you did all that in one day! Pretty impressive .
Ice, ewwwww, I hate the ice. At my age I have gotten so I will sit in my car after rehearsals, all alone in a scary parking lot and wait for my car to warm up enough to not have to scrape. Snow is fine but that ice, I hates the stuff.
We had Thundersnow and that was pretty cool but I really had hoped I would see Snow lightning. I have seen that several times and it is just so cool!
Good luck to you no matter what may come your way.

(4,723 posts)A more perfect day for being outside couldn't be ordered. We're used to massive shifts in weather in this part of the state. 11/11/1911 set a record high of 80, and a record low of 13 in Springfield. Similar situation here today, just not as intense.

(34,109 posts)I have only been there once but thought it seemed like a lovely place. I have been around it but only in it once. My conductor lives there. It seems like a really nice arts town.
Wild weather swings are pretty normal here too but that is some switch from 80 -13! The plains states are a hoot weather-wise but then every place says that so whatever, I would have to say that change you had was a doozy!

(4,723 posts)It is very very red here, but there are small pockets of blue. Places like the downtown area and Commercial street are growing more vibrant and progressive all the time, and resemble the rest of town less and less. The First Friday art walks downtown are great. I only get to one here and there, but they are well attended.

(34,109 posts)Topeka, the town I live close to, has finally begun to do the same. Our downtown is changing and there are Art walks here too. I have never done one but I should. We have an arts community with a nice little area with some really nice things. Change is hard. This city is red with a very large streak of libertarian. I don't know how many identify that way but they sure vote like that. It is nice to finally have some progress, hard won progress. Good to hear about Springfield.

This was not like the blizzard in your video but it does qualify as a blizzard. Blowing snow at a certain speed for a certain amount of time. We were lucky, this is a tiny one but a blizzard none the less.

(34,109 posts)I hate being cold and I hate having to wear all those clothes just to do my work then come in and change, then do it again then do it again. But we have not had a winter, a real winter in a few years. It did get really really cold a few times but we have not had a real, good snow here in quite a long time. In the last 10 years I have lived here I remember a snowy winter early on where once we had about 8 inches and it drifted and made things rough getting up to the barn from the house. Then one year later we had 16 inches and drifts and I had to walk through that since the truck would not make it. That is what should happen but then we don't get much rain anymore either so..........as much as I hate being cold, dealing with ice and changing my clothes a million times a day it seems, I think it would be nice if we got a good winter with snow and everything once again.
