S&P 500 hits more than four-year high after ECB move

Source: reuters

Reuters) - The S&P 500 index leaped to its highest level in more than four years and the Nasdaq jumped 2 percent on Thursday as investors lauded a new bond-buying program in Europe aimed at containing the region's debt crisis and signs of improvement in the U.S. labor market.

The rally was broad, with banks and semiconductor stocks in the lead. Advancers outnumbered decliners by a ratio of more than 4 to 1. The Dow index had its biggest gain in two months as shares of Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) hit an all-time high and last rose 1.75 percent to $51.68.

ECB President Mario Draghi, seeking to back up his July pledge to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro, said the central bank's new plan of potentially unlimited bond-buying would address bond market distortions and "unfounded" fears of investors about the survival of the euro.

U.S. companies added staff in August at the fastest clip in five months and a gauge of employment in the service sector also improved, upbeat signals for a struggling labor market. Another report showed new claims for jobless benefits fell last week to the lowest level in a month.

the stock market is hardly the be-all/end-all, but how great is this little tidbit for obama to boast about in his speech?

Romney and the GOP must be in meltdown with this news, I mean they are the party who has been "cheering" the "BAD" news every month, who know that if the economy is doing better, jobs are on the rise, that they don't stand a chance in hell of taking back the WH, and have an even harder time of keeping control of the House, and "NOT" losing seats in the senate!

Damn isn't it a great day?

Rather than attacking on substance of arguments, all they got is bullshit about the VENUE of Obama's speech.

Oh, and they are really hysterical over the Dem platform's initial "omission" of God (the platform referenced "faith" instead of God, but don't expect Fox to point that out)and seems even more pissed that God was put back in. They keep showing that unhappy Arab-American delegate--who was actually protesting (rightfully) the inclusion of the Jerusalem as capitol of Israel line (but again, don't expect Fox to tell you that).

So, all they got is dog whistles.
