Michael Bloomberg to decide on 2020 bid by January or February
Source: The Hill
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire and former mayor of New York, said he plans to decide by January or February whether he will run for president in 2020.
"I think January, February would be about as late as you can do it and as early as you can gather enough information," he told the Associated Press in an interview published Tuesday.
Bloomberg added that he would sit down with advisers around Thanksgiving, Christmas and "maybe a few weeks into January" to chart out a potential bid.
Bloomberg, who has switched his party affiliation several times, told the AP that he "will be a Democrat for the rest of my life." Bloomberg donated heavily in the midterms, giving tens of millions of dollars to Democrats, mostly to candidates for House seats.

(37,648 posts)He's moderate, but I think the Democratic Party right now is left of that, so I don't know how that would work out.
Ultimately, I'd vote for him. But I think many others would need more excitement to get them to the polls. You know the old saying about Republicans falling in line, but Democrats fall in love.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's speech at the Republican National Convention, August 30, 2004, New York City.
<...>
No place epitomizes the American experience and the American spirit more than New York City. Ironically, it is exactly because we are a city that embraces freedom, that welcomes everyone and encourages their dreams, that New York remains on the front lines in the war on terror.
I want to thank President Bush for supporting New York City and changing the homeland security funding formula and for leading the global war on terrorism.

The president deserves our support.

(129,096 posts)He's a true weather vane and runs under whatever party he thinks he can win with.
When you are a billionaire, you can afford to technically be "apolitical" because you can operate outside of the law.
In his case, he has certain "issues" that he is very passionate about and that he will definitely spend money on. "Gun Control" is one, "Crime Prevention" is another (which resulted in all the nightmarish "Stop and Frisk" ), and "Public Health" is another as some might recall that he was the first to attempt to implement a "Sugary Drink/Beverage Tax" - in NYC. The courts eventually threw his version out but years later, we implemented that here in Philly and so far, the law has actually survived court challenges.

(13,305 posts)I'll have to be forgiven for not awaiting this announcement with baited breath.
Maybe he can lecture us on civility and bipartisanship. Or will his entire campaign be predicated on his usual bleating on about not being mean to rich people or they'll take their ball and go home.

(493 posts)and repeatedly told people what a con man trump was. I personally like Michael Bloomberg and will listen to what his platform will be. I think he will weigh his options before jumping in. He was Mayor for NYC for three terms so you know that even tho he is a businessman ,,he is politically more savvy than
🍄rump and that says a lot. Will depend a lot on his running mate also.
As for his wealth, he wasn't handed a million dollar check ...he did it from the ground up. So he knows poverty and hard work. 🍄rump knows he is well aware of his corruption and am sure Bloomberg will not be afraid to expose him. JMHO

(129,096 posts)by spending who knows how much lobbying to change the term limits. And his "Stop and Frisk" policy simply devastated the black community across the boroughs. The rate of harassment of young black men didn't finally drop until he was sued and the Obama administration started working on creating a police reform Task Force.
