Democrat Kyrsten Sinema wins Arizona US Senate seat

Source: AP

Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema has won Arizona’s open U.S. Senate seat, beating Republican Rep. Martha McSally.

The race between Sinema and McSally was one of the most closely watched in the nation. Sinema was declared the winner Monday as her lead grew insurmountable during Arizona’s lengthy vote-count.

Sinema is a former liberal activist who became a centrist member of Congress. Her win follows years of Democratic shutouts at the statewide level in Arizona and shows that the longtime Republican bastion is becoming a swing state.

McSally hammered Sinema over her former liberal stances and claimed she was pretending to be a centrist.

-HAW!!!

My older son moved to Phoenix this past June, so he was one more vote for Sinema. I am thrilled he will have a Democratic Senator. Here in Illinois, we have Durbin and Duckworth

a long reply.

Thought I would try returning to an afternoon nap/meditation Monday. Unfortunately my inner clock is out of sync and I am up early reading a diary on dkos about the Arizona Senate race.

Gov. Ducey could replace Kyl with McCain or McSally. These are the two most discussed but Ducey may have his own sycophant in waiting. We will know soon enough.

If you care to read the entire diary on dkos, the link is below.

The author includes a link to an old Arizona Republic article with local sourcing.

Gov. Doug Ducey expected to move quickly on appointing a John McCain replacement
9/2/2018

…snip
Other possible candidates include:
Eileen Klein, the former president of the Arizona Board of Regents whom Ducey appointed as state treasurer in April.
Kirk Adams, Ducey's chief of staff who runs the governor's day-to-day operations.
Barbara Barrett, a business executive and the first Republican woman to run for governor in Arizona.
Michael Bidwill, the president of the Arizona Cardinals and longtime Ducey ally who went to prep school with Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Trump's Supreme Court nominee.
Jon Kyl, a former three-term senator and mentor to Ducey. (fait accompli*)
Former congressmen John Shadegg and Matt Salmon

But at this point, I think it is down to:

Kyl staying, or McSally getting appointed.

If Gaynor somehow manages to win the Secretary of State race (he's trailing) I could see Ducey resign, and have now Governor Gaynor appoint him. But Hobbs winning would be an end to that.
