Gov candidate Kemp resigns as secretary of state

Source: AP

Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp says he is resigning as Georgia's secretary of state.

Attorney Russ Willard with the attorney general's office of Georgia announced the resignation in federal court Thursday morning.

Willard said Kemp delivered a letter of resignation to Gov. Nathan Deal on Thursday morning, and it is effective at 11:59 a.m.

The state said Kemp will not perform any election-related duties Thursday.

Kemp is holding a press conference this morning and afterwards plans to meet with the outgoing governor to begin the transition despite ballots still in the process of being counted.

unless the court rules on it saying he's the de facto winner, it ain't over till it's over. A recount is necessary that will include all the ones suppressed.

I imagine he was likely advised to do so to avoid the appearance of impropriety. Of course, all right-thinking people know that he should have done so long ago, but I'm actually quite surprised he did so at all. That's not a typical Republican move.

8. I think it's because he's sure he's won. He's just doing what would be normal in his situation.

He has to resign so an interim SoS can be appointed to take over his duties while he gets familiarized with the job of Gov'ner over the next couple of months.

He's ignoring any calls for a recount. Let's see what his interim replacement does when push comes to shove...

He could have easily stayed in office for several more weeks to take any steps needed to promote his own victory. In today's Trumpian world, that is what I would expect any card-carrying GOP member to do. I'm surprised he resigned while he could still do further damage.

and his fig leaf of choice is resigning before the result gets certified. "See? Person X certified the result. Are you questioning their integrity?"
