Trump adviser rules out deal on raising federal minimum wage

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow on Thursday said he would oppose any deal that would raise the federal minimum wage.
"My view is no. My view is a federal minimum wage is a terrible idea, and will damage, in particular, small businesses," he said when asked about the prospect at a Washington Post event.
Democrats have pushed for increasing the federal minimum wage to as much as $15 an hour, over double its current rate of $7.25.
"Today, a full-time minimum wage worker is unable to afford to rent a small, two-bedroom apartment anywhere in the United States. Republicans failed trickle down policies have left the American people with a raw deal, jeopardizing our childrens future and the future of our economy," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a July statement marking nine years since the last minimum wage hike.

Then it's millions in embezzlement and self-dealing.

Who cares if it blows away or gets sucked into a jet engine when they make more money in one year than most of us will in a lifetime?

(23,158 posts)I remember so well them wailing and moaning about how the minimum wage increase under Clinton would ABSOLUTELY DESTROY OUR ECONOMY AND DRAG US INTO THE DIRT WITH COMPANIES FAILING AND MORE PEOPLE OUT OF WORK!! RAGE, RAGE, RAGE AND RANT was all you heard. Guess what happened, the biggest increase in the national economy and in productivity and in liveability in the history of this country. The debt would have been zero if GW hadn't destroyed Clinton's success by slashing taxes for rich and corps and estates. Repug hate the working class and poor and do everything in their power to destroy us or at least keep us beat down to the ground.

(56,829 posts)even a raise to $10 or $12 an hour (assuming a compromise) would help out many millions of Americans. Oh, I forgot, the poor and the young don't vote Republican, so fuck 'em.

(26,760 posts)The point is that there is no deal currently on the table to support or oppose. This is just a "sun expected to rise in the morning" story to fill column inches. Democrats would like a higher minimum wage... republicans don't want to touch it (and wouldn't oppose getting rid of it). No "news" at all (which causes me to look up and notice that it's posted in LBN).

(6,933 posts)A REAL BOOMING economy, not this phony smoke and mirrors--"look at the DOW!!" bullshit that Trump shovels. But...as usual with these RW CONS there is NEVER a good time to raise the MW. Never has been with that party.
People that make more money, have better things and a better lifestyle tend to THINK more about who is effecting their lives politically, instead of working two or three jobs and only thinking about the car breaking down or collapsing. Republicans NEVER want a working middle class that THINKS and decides on their own.

(11,993 posts)It assumes an expectation that people think minimum wage should be enough for a 2 BR apt. Unlikely. People of lesser means can get a 1 BR apt, or a studio, or share an apt, or rent a room... "minumum" does not imply a 2 BR lifestyle. I worry about "liberal overreach" rhetoric backfiring.
