World's tallest statue unveiled in India
Source: ABC
The prime minister of India today unveiled the worlds largest statue, dedicated to Sardar Patel, a nationalist who helped unite modern India after its independence from Britain.
"We are doing everything possible to turn Sardar Patel's vision into a reality and ensure a good-quality life for our fellow Indians," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. The monument, called the Statue of Unity, stands at nearly 600 feet and cost a staggering $460 million to build.
That makes the mega statue almost 200 feet higher than the worlds next largest, the Spring Temple Buddha in China, which stands at about 420 feet. The new statue in India is also nearly twice the height of the Statue of Liberty, which is 305 feet tall. The Statue of Unity, located in the western state of Gujarat, is expected to attract tens of thousands of tourists per day. The project has proved controversial, however.
Farmers in the state of Gujarat were reportedly bemused that millions of dollars were spent on the flagship project. The BBC reported that locals have expressed deep concern that they still lack basic irrigation facilities vital to the regions economy while mass investment has been diverted to a largely-ceremonial project.

BY PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY
I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who saidTwo vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

[pause]
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein : Of course. That would simplify everything.
Inga : In other vords: his veins, his feet, his hands, his organs vould all have to be increased in size.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein : Exactly.
Inga : He vould have an enormous schwanzstucker.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein : That goes without saying.

(12,591 posts)If a punk ass country like India can erect such a tall statute, clearly one twice as tall can be built in the image of Donnie Two Scoops.

Here in the U.S.A. we build plenty of very expensive useless objects... aircraft carriers, F-35s, etc., while our people go hungry, homeless, and without appropriate medical care.
As Theodore Sturgeon noted, 90% of work is crud.
This monument is something the people who built it can point out to their grandkids... "I helped build that!"
My own grandpa was an engineer working on the Apollo Project. Bits of his metal took men to the moon and back. Some are in the Smithsonian.
Previous his aerospace work he was an Army Air officer in World War Two. After the war he built military aircraft and missiles. He never talked about that. His pride and joy was the work he did for the "waste of money" space program.
If you know how to raise lots of money and create jobs people can be proud of, then go for it...
I'm handing out candy for Halloween now. We have a big scary front porch, lots of lights and special effects we've invested in over the last thirty years, about half our own art.
A total waste of money too.
Yet the children coming by seem happy.
