U.S. government broadcaster to punish workers for Soros report

WASHINGTON — The U.S. government's international broadcasting agency says it will discipline employees responsible for a television report on philanthropist George Soros that violated its professional ethics and standards.

The U.S. Agency for Global Media says that those who produced the report would be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into "apparent misconduct" and may face disciplinary measures, including firing depending on the results of the probe.

The report on Soros aired in May on Spanish-language Radio Television Marti network, which broadcasts to Cuba.

It described him as a "Jewish multi-millionaire" influencing nations through nongovernment groups. It referenced the conservative organization Judicial Watch as believing he was undermining democracies.

Were it not for the recent tragedy in Pittsburgh, it likely would have never garnered attention, much less any kind of action. Anti-Semitism has risen 57% in the last year. I knew this. Many Jews knew this. But, those outside of our community (with rare exceptions) didn't know, care to know, or even acknowledge it. It explains the recent spate of reports and posts of people exclaiming "I had no idea anti-Semitism was so bad!" Yeah, because they don't want to listen to Jews and our concerns.

Sadly, I think we are heading for another mass tragedy.

5. My debate partner from high school is a Jew

I really haven't stayed that close to him. He is a multi-millionaire investment banker and publisher who is getting more screen time commenting on his field of expertise - Venezuela. One of the nicest pictures he has shared on Facebook is him and his son at worship.

I have never understood the hate we have in this world. There were not many Jews around the Mississippi Gulf Coast when I went to high school with my friend. He is a great man who is so talented in so many ways.

6. Jews have always been seen as an "other".

We have blamed for almost everything society has to offer, as well as its ills. FFS, in Nazi Germany, we were accused of being behind capitalism, while simultaneously accused of being anti-capitalist. We were "behind" the Slave trade (not true). We were "responsible" for the black Civil Rights movement (not true, though we were involved). We "pass as white" and are "infiltrators" to the "White Race" by diluting and polluting "white people". We "back" (though physical or financial means) every movement, good or bad, people will claim a "Jew" is behind it (see the recent tragedy). We are accused of moral decay because of support for the GLBT. The list goes on. To make matters worse, we are often even attacked from other marginalized groups because we are an easy target and attacking us will not, usually, upset the power elite. We only make up 2.4% of the US population, but in almost EVERY election we are blamed for the elections outcome. We only make up .2% of the world population, but somehow we are responsible for almost all wars (claimed to be fought on our behalf)?! Again, the list goes on.

The segment on Radio Televisión Martí, a Spanish-language network that broadcasts to Cuba, appeared months before the attempted Soros bombing.

Five months before George Soros received a pipe bomb in the mail, a US government-funded broadcasting network produced a segment that attacked the liberal donor—a common target of conservative conspiracy theories—as a “multimillionaire Jew” and “the architect of the financial collapse of 2008.”

The video segment, which aired in May, was produced by Radio Televisión Martí, a Spanish-language network that broadcasts news and propaganda to Cuba to promote US foreign policy interests. The Miami-based network is overseen by the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which is part of the United States Agency for Global Media, an independent US government agency whose stated mission is “to inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy.”

The taxpayer-subsidized video portrays Soros as a threat to Latin American democracy. Featuring ominous music and images of street violence, the 15-minute video begins with the narration: “George Soros has his eye on Latin America. But Judicial Watch, an American investigative legal group, also has its eye on Soros and what it sees as his lethal influence to destroy democracies. It describes him as a millionaire investor and stock market speculator who exploits capitalism and Wall Street to finance anti-system movements that fill his pockets.” Judicial Watch, a right-wing group, is in the midst of a fundraising campaign called Expose Soros and has been looking for evidence that taxpayers are funding Soros’ advocacy work.

The United States Agency for Global Media is fully funded by US taxpayers. The agency, until recently known as the Broadcasting Board of Governors, has an annual budget of around $700 million, of which $24 million went to the Office of Cuba Broadcasting last fiscal year.
