Mayor asks Trump to postpone Pittsburgh visit

Source: wpxi.com

Updated: Oct 29, 2018 - 8:34 PM

PITTSBURGH - .........................................

The announcement that he's coming was made Monday afternoon and so far there's been no indication from the White House of exactly what location he will be visiting.

........................................

Community leaders are split on the visit.

The current rabbi of the Tree of Life Synagogue has said he welcomes the president, but the former leader of the synagogue said she does not welcome him, calling the president a purveyor of hate speech.

Now Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto is asking the president to hold off on visiting the city.

"We do not have enough public safety officials to provide enough protection at the funerals and to be able at the same time draw attention to a potential presidential visit. If the President is looking to come to Pittsburgh I would ask that he not do so while we are burying the dead. I would ask that White House staff contact the families and ask them if they want the President to be here."

.................. In remarks to reporters Monday afternoon, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto asked the White House to consider "two important factors" before scheduling a visit: the will of the victims' families, and the fact that the city's attention - including the efforts of law enforcement officers - will be focused Tuesday on the victims' funerals, which are likely to begin that day.

"If the president is looking to come to Pittsburgh, I would ask that he not do so while we are burying the dead. Our attention and our focus is going to be on them, and we don't have public safety that we can take away from what is needed in order to do both," Peduto said, according to a transcript of his remarks provided to The Washington Post.

City and civic officials said early Monday they were unaware of the details of the planned visits. There were concerns about logistics and whether police would be able to handle the presidential visit, the people said..............

By travelling to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Trump is ignoring a plea from Pittsburgh's mayor that Trump refrain from visiting "while we are burying the dead."

"Our attention and our focus is going to be on them."

The first funeral is planned for Tuesday.

I thinks it is a good idea for a president to stand in solidarity when a tragic event happens like this, but not a president that did not denounce the KKK or Nazis. Or a president that in general incites violence and blows dog wistles calling himself a Nationlist, then he has to make a statement denouncing the bombs his demeanor is one of a person being forced to say something he doesn't really mean. He had no emotion behind what he was saying. He is the worst thing that has ever happened to this country in terms of morality and human decency. If we don't take him out of power more violence like the synagogue shooting and mail bombings will continue to happen that's why its more important than ever to get out and VOTE!

More Neo-Nazis decide to take advantage of the lax security of the funerals. As a fresh violence erupts, Trump would probably tweet an inane complaint about terrible peanuts in Pittsburgh or someshit.

Is there seriously not a single person in this administration that can steer him away from making himself the center of attention at all times? Even from the grieving? The bodies and bullet holes are metaphorically still warm, prick.

It is customary to grieve and pay respects at a funeral. He hasn't a clue about either emotion and everyone knows it. It sullies the occasion. Stoking hatred is about all he knows how to do...and everybody knows it, including his "fans".

aside, no President should insert himself into a situation like this. A Presidential visit consumes massive local resources, before, during and after. No city needs that in the middle of an already resource-intensive situation.

Yes Rachel did a good job reporting this but I am worried about her.

Did her corporate masters get to her to tone it down? Don Lemon just did a tremendous segment about Squirrel Hill and the murders.

I will never stop watching Rachel but something is different.

Do we need to shift. Like you can get your point across by just saying how dignified other people are? Or calling light on positive people, positive politicians.

I think our greatest liberal politicians were like that. You praise people and let the audience figure out that someone else isn't like that.

.....from the Synagogue representatives that Trump was not welcome in Pittsburgh until he condemned his Nationalism, immigrant hatred and denounces the violence he incites, was all just talk?

Trump attacked the press on the same day as the shootings and after CNN was threatened with a bomb.

What about the immigrant children Rabbi? The racism he spouts?

It's one thing for the Rabbi to visit the WH---but to have the inciter as a guest in the synagogue seems so covering up the problem, I can't see straight.

I really think Rachel should have mentioned that. He should have a say in this matter. Rabbi Jeffrey Myers from The Tree of Life Congregation should have the say in whether the president is invited and not us.

He is suffering a lot of loss and he should control that decision. Or at the least we should acknowledge he has said this.

Grieving families have enough with which to deal. They shouldn't be confronted with the baggage associated with Trump's visit. A considerate person would inquire about the appropriateness of a visit before making a decision and announcing it. I doubt Trump has done that
