ATLANTA (AP) Former President Jimmy Carter is wading into the contentious Georgia governors race with a personal appeal to Republican candidate Brian Kemp: Resign as secretary of state to avoid damaging public confidence in the outcome of his hotly contested matchup with Democrat Stacey Abrams.
The 94-year-old Carters request, made in an Oct. 22 letter obtained by The Associated Press , is the latest turn in a campaign whose closing month is being defined by charges of attempted voter suppression and countercharges of attempted voter fraud.
Kemp has thus far dismissed Democratic demands that he step aside as Georgias chief elections officer. But Carter attempted to approach the matter less as a partisan who has endorsed Abrams and more as the former president whos spent the decades since he left the Oval Office monitoring elections around the world.
One of the key requirements for a fair and trusted process is that there be a nonbiased supervision of the electoral process, Carter wrote, adding that stepping aside would be a sign that you recognize the importance of this key democratic principle and want to ensure the confidence of our citizens in the outcome.

(28,810 posts)that reminded me of Condi Rice saying "don't impugn my integrity" - come on! republicans have no integrity, no shame, no ethics or morals. I love President Carter and think he's the most underrated president of my lifetime, but i believe his words will fall on deaf ears. Republicans and integrity, never the twain shall meet.

(245 posts)I do hope he is successful and I'm hopeful that now two former Presidents see the hypocrisy and outright evil being perpetuated against our democratic institutions.

That we dont is creating a government thats serving its members self interest and the interests of its donors *more so* than serving the public interest.

(32,726 posts)Republicans do not give a FF about conflicts of interest, especially not when it's about another GOP member.
Look for Repukes to save their outrage for the Democrats, otherwise it's crickets.

(29,270 posts)As well as outright rules for the related campaign finance mess. We cannot sit back contentedly the next time. This is where we can make the most difference for the future, IMO.

(24,594 posts)although Kemp has already damaged the process beyond repair. I don't think anyone expects this election to have any integrity.

(91 posts)Kemp's just another racist southern politician. He couldn't care less about the "integrity" of any aspect of Georgia government, much less an election in which (1) he's running, and (2) his opponent is (horrors of horrors) a black woman who's a helluva lot brighter than he is.
The fix is in. Kemp has already suppressed the vote sufficiently for him to slither his way into office.

(27,995 posts)He is from Georgia and has monitored elections all over the world. He knows election fairness.
I admire him for calling on Kemp to turn over running the state's election to a third party after the widespread voter purges.

(57,172 posts)politics in Georgia. What are you suggesting, not voting and rolling over because "the fix is in"?
Not a good message to push here. Are you considering "walking back"?

(205,881 posts)He took on corrupt Georgia politics in his very first run for local office. And, as has already been said, one of the chief missions of The Carter Center has been to monitor and ensure fair elections all over the world. He's encountered corrupt cheaters like Kemp from the very beginning.

(205,881 posts)I have President Carter's autobiography, "A Full Life: Reflections at 90," and have learned so much more about him from that and recommend it highly. I have it on disc, play it in my car (read by the author!) whenever I have to drive any distance and he really has led a fascinating life - he doesn't even get to his run for president until disc #5, LOL.
And he is nothing if not determined and persistent - that's how he managed to succeed in the Camp David Accords. He leaves no stone unturned, attention to detail. And the current major mission of The Carter Center is the elimination of preventable diseases in third world countries. They have made huge strides in eradicating so many - and he hopes to live long enough to see the complete elimination of Guinea worm, a parasite spread by drinking contaminated water.
