Julian Castro: Romney "has no idea how good he's had it"

By Brian Montopoli Topics Campaign 2012

(CBS News) CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- San Antonio mayor Julian Castro, who was plucked from relative obscurity to give the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, on Tuesday assailed Mitt Romney as a son of privilege who does not understand that many Americans can't rely on their families to help them succeed.

"Mitt Romney, quite simply, doesn't get it," said the 37-year-old Castro. "A few months ago he visited a university in Ohio and gave the students there a little entrepreneurial advice. 'Start a business,' he said. But how? 'Borrow money if you have to from your parents,' he told them. Gee, why didn't I think of that?"

"Some people are lucky enough to borrow money from their parents, but that shouldn't determine whether you can pursue your dreams," continued Castro. "Not in American, not here, not in the 21st century. I don't think Governor Romney meant any harm. I think he's a good guy. He just has no idea how good he's had it."

Castro, who recieved a rapturous reception from the convention crowd, opened his remarks by discussing his grandmother, an orphan who moved from Mexico to San Antonio as a child and ended up with a fourth-grade education. Castro said she worked hard as a maid and in other jobs to give his mother a better life, so that she could then give he and his twin brother an even better one.

Man, if they can keep the momentum going!

Come on BarackObama.com...get us some "Forward" bumper stickers and stuff going (they don't have a "Forward" one).

Villification and demonizing your opponent will only carry you so far. If you want people's attention long enough to make a point, and make an impression, that is how you do it.

Scare tactics and boogeymen, vile imagery, and smears and guilt by assocaition, are not going to carry the day for the Republican Party. A cold hard truth they are going to wake up to in November.

10. It's been their playbook for so long, they have no other frame of reference.

And the reason it worked for so long is that for the past 30 years, the Dems have backed down whenever the repugs complained. Those days are gone, the Dems aren't backing down and staying on point in calling out the lies and hypocrisy. Then when the repugs start whining it just makes them look foolish.

That's our mayor. Granted, we have a problem about governors around here, but there are Democrats still in Texas, and we are fighting the good fight.

After the little "bless his heart" digs from the RNC convention this was delicious.
