UPDATE: Megyn Kelly's NBC morning show has ended
Source: Washington Post
Megyn Kellys NBC morning show has ended. The network announced Friday that other Today show anchors will replace her in the 9 a.m. hour bringing an end to Megyn Kelly Today. The cancellation follows months of the hosts missteps, awkward moments and racially insensitive defense of blackface Halloween costumes.
Kelly, once a star at Fox News, had long nurtured ambitions of moving out of the conservative news bubble and into the top tier of mainstream broadcast personalities, with aspirations of becoming a mix of Oprah Winfrey and Charlie Rose.
She once said she wanted to help people, just as Oprah had. Her book title suggested she wanted to settle for more. She debuted her softer-edged NBC morning show Megyn Kelly Today by saying she was kind of done with politics for now. But her rocky transition to morning news showed just how difficult it is to separate ones identity from the Fox News brand.
The end of her show was announced in a tweet by NBC News. People close to the matter said Thursday that Kellys lawyers and NBC brass planned to meet today to hash out the details of their relationship. NBC lured Kelly from Fox News early last year with a three-year, $69 million contract.

Even if she doesn't make it back to Fox, there are still plenty of other right wing media to make it on.

(6,931 posts)Can't tell me that spewing blatant racism isn't a cause for FIRING in her contract. She's a third of the way through a three year contract, she shouldn't be getting paid for two years that she doesn't work for being a racist.

AND her agent will seek out some new vehicle or outlet to put her back on television. Sinclair, maybe? Or would Pox Noise want her back, since she was their million-dollar baby of sorts. Or would they think she's total damaged goods by now, with negative hoodoo surrounding her? They're not solid number-one rated anymore. They need something to beat Rachel Maddow.
AND she'll do the coast-to-coast book tour and get a lot of face time that way. How much face time depends on how many people tune in at the beginning and how her book sells. She could do well on that score. Remember, America loves to dish. Gossip is our life-blood. I just hate the whole idea that her brand was forced on a really excellent and credible news network, and sullied the network's brand.
Network executives, mainly male ones, really need to think twice about grabbing the "shiny object." This isn't the first time they've wasted millions of dollars and months of viewer loyalty on some allegedly hot blonde on-camera news/talk talent.
Reminds me when "Today" show cohost Jane Pauley was kicked to the curb years ago. For no credible reason, frankly. The NBC brass felt it was time to go younger and blonder, and thus promoted news reader Deborah Norville to the co-hosting gig. Dick Ebersol, who was then a programming higher-up, thought Norville was the absolute bee's knees and he personally drove this abrupt change. I read one extended report about his being enthralled by her beauty and how photogenic she was, and how stylishly she dressed - described as "her natty clothes". Without stating it outright, you got the distinct impression he had a bigtime crush on her. But viewers hated this. Pauley was publicly beloved, and to her credit, behaved in the most elegant and classy way one could imagine during a big public media and pop culture mess. The transition and "early retirement" hadn't been her idea. She bowed out with tremendous grace. "Today" show fans' reaction was impossible to ignore. The ratings plunged. Rival "Good Morning America" took over number-one in the morning ratings and stayed there. The viewers were NOT buying. I remember hearing Pauley speak at a media event and she said her husband Gary "Doonesbury" Trudeau started teasing her about being "The Loved One." Norville was a colossal failure. And her patron at NBC, Dick Ebersole, was the goat of the year. One of those "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" things.
Sheesh - I was still working back then. I remember seeing a cover of a magazine published by the Singer sewing machine company, and she was on the cover, because it was widely known that she was an accomplished seamstress and made a lot of her own clothes. The caption on the cover was "Today Sewer." As in - the lady who likes to sew - who cohosts the "Today" show. But I remember thinking that I would not have used that wording. That was around the same time that the "Today" show ratings were going - um - southward toward a different kind of sewer. A MOST unfortunate spelling issue. I don't know why they didn't catch it before that magazine was published nationwide.
HAH!
SHIT - Dick Ebersole! This just reminded me of another story about his dumb-fuckery at NBC. HE'S the guy who nearly deep-sized "Saturday Night Live," back in the day. After the inaugural Belushi/Aykroyd/Radner "golden years" finished (and most of the principals had gone on to careers on the big screen) Lorne Michaels left, too. Ebersole replaced him with one of Michaels' associate producers, Jean Doumanian, as executive producer. She brought in a whole new cast, that featured the Franken & Davis writing team (Al Franken and the late Tom Davis) now doing more on-camera stuff, a bunch of other players who weren't very high-profile, and the one new breakout star, a very young Eddie Murphy. But Eddie Murphy was just about the only reason to watch, that year. The ratings went south. And Al Franken went on camera to denounce Dick Ebersole for MORE lousy programming decisions, declaring flat out, live on camera, that Ebersole "doesn't know dick." I think, IF memory serves, Franken & Davis were about to quit, themselves, around then, or were officially doing that, as of Franken's public rant. Back when SNL was widely viewed as having its best days behind them. The Doumanian era mercifully lasted only one year.
Those were the days...

(32,644 posts)I agree that firing Jane Pauley was a HUGE mistake. Firing Ann Curry was another one that backfired tremendously. They gave way too much credence & power to Matt Lauer, who clearly didn't deserve it.
Dick Ebersole did a few good things for Saturday Night Live, despite being a complete asshole. Didn't he bring in Billy Crystal, Chris Guest, and Martin Short, and several others? Amid the many bad decisions Ebersole made, he allowed Al Franken's talent free rein and we finally got to see how good he really was. Even after Lorne Michaels came back to "save" the show, Ebersole continued as the exec in charge for several more years. I don't think it really hurt his career, whereas these days he'd just be fired immediately.
Lastly I agree that Megyn Kelly will probably write a book and parlay this into a new show on another network. She was definitely overpaid at NBC and Fox News doesn't have the budget for her any more. I really don't care, do U?

(14,174 posts)I'll never forget in those days when I joined DU as a respite from the pro war machine on every network 24/7, in 2003. None more intense than on Fox News and MK.
MK was prominent in not only praising everything Bush and Cheney did, but mocking and deriding Democrats and "liberals". She had this unabashed snark perfected. Her cadence would shift dramatically when either talking about a Democrat and when talking about Republicans. She had a way of reading news that even if she was reading some quote from a Democrat defending some action, she would read it in such a sarcastic tone, then look at her viewers raise her eyebrows, and make some snide comment.
Here she is reporting from Obama's inauguration. All she can talk about is how the military members she talked with all praise leaving President Bush, and how great the invasion was.

(14,174 posts)And I have to say kudos to D. L. Hughley. He was as calm and articulate as one can possibly be on a Fox News interview, with their strategy of interrupting, changing stories, insults etc... to throw them off.
And at the end, what I brought up, her typical raised eyebrow sneer into the camera after the segment to indicate to the deplorables how she and they all think he's an idiot.
Gawd I can't stand her. Yet she, O'Riley, Beck, all those scumbags will live as mulitmillionaires for the rest of their lives. Paid so well for lying and promoting lies and worse fooling the gulible segment of the public into believing such nonsense. She was one of the pioneers in stoking the white supremacist resurgence that paved the way for a Trump.

(18,636 posts)Having burned her bridges at Fox News, Kelly is now in a position where no one will want her. Despite her pretty TV face, she's as useless now as Windows 98.
Maybe she can podcast with Paula Deen on 101 tasteless recipes for black eyed peas.

(81,304 posts)That's just who she is, I guess, a TV Ice Queen - when the medium craves warm and cozy and nonthreatening, especially in weekday mornings when friendly approachable people like Savannah Guthrie and Hota and Kathy Lee, and Katie Couric before them, reigned supreme. I don't watch Pox Noise, NEVER have, WASN'T a Megyn Kelly fan, and I'm STILL not a Megyn Kelly fan.
She's NOT relatable, but she sure does seem to like to show skin and shape.
I'm just glad nobody at NBC tried to pawn her off on MSNBC the way they did with Greta Van Susteren - who was an EQUALLY poor fit. She disappeared after 13 weeks. Megyn lasted 13 months.
Good Riddance. You never fit at NBC, and you were never going to fit in there. You had this superior and combative attitude that alienates both viewers and coworkers, and requires the hottest of hot ratings and TOTAL time slot dominance to be able to excuse. You literally have to be the 800-pound gorilla in the room, the way Johnny Carson was. NOBODY touched him because his "Tonight Show" was responsible for almost obscenely large advertising earnings for NBC. A FULL QUARTER of ALL of NBC's annual revenue was generated by Carson's "Tonight Show." ONE out of EVERY FOUR dollars that network brought in during his heyday was generated by HIM and HIS SHOW. And you NEVER got that far, Megyn. Never even got close, which didn't surprise many of us outside of the programming "geniuses" at that network. I guess it must have been the blonde hair, the tight skimpy wardrobe, and that perplexingly sharp-angled front-of-a-locomotive jaw line, maybe?
I never got the much-vaunted physical appeal that Megyn Kelly had. She still leaves me cold. I guess the Pox Noise demographic of aging horny love-lorn white men who dominate their viewership thought she was the bee's knees...

Im enjoying reading about this by the commentariat - where the point is being made that the Pox Noise brand is a black mark on a Pox Noisers resume. It tarnished. It diminishes. It doesnt transport or transfer. She wanted to move into the purported media mainstream with her star expanding into the highest heights of the mainstream news pantheon. Yeah. She wishes!
Youre damaged goods if you work at Pox Noise. You might as well stay there. The mainstream outlets dont want you, and you dont belong there anyway. Poor widdle Megyn is apparently learning that only now, the hard way, and way too late. She can cry all the way to the bank on her way out, I guess. Buh-BYE. And good riddance.

(2,795 posts)She did so well at Fox because that is who she is and what she believes. She got into the habit of it being okay to spew the crap that she did on Fox. Then when it came time to act like more generic, less grossly opinionated commentators, she couldn't do it. Couldn't truly hide it.
I wonder if Fox will take her back. Or did she burn that bridge enough?

(32,644 posts)She's been doing the work of 3 or 4 people for long enough. She didn't even get a raise when she took over for Matt Lauer. Well maybe she got a small raise, but not "Matt Lauer" money. That would have tripled her salary! NBC is just as misogynist as all the other networks. I like her so much more than Megyn Kelly too.
