Billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer is aiming to finish off his spending spree in the 2018 congressional midterm elections with a $16 million infusion across all of his political organizations, CNBC has learned.
One of Steyer's aides, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the philanthropist and liberal activist is looking to splurge in the final 11 days of the midterms in order to continue his mission of helping Democrats unseat Republicans across the country. The $16 million is part of the $120 million that Steyer was planning to spend, the aide noted.
A spokesman for Steyer declined to comment.

(43,182 posts)I just don't know what large amounts of money can do. Much of TV and radio are ad buys and sold weeks or months ahead. Campaign workers, phone banks. Signs take a day or two to print.

(14,317 posts)This is a blue wave year unlike any other, so all bets are off. Texas is closer to a win than the polls say because they weight likely voters previous registrants. They cant even see the new voters, and there are tons.
Heidi took a gamble and voted against Kavanaugh, and its costing her in angry opposition. But the voter suppression scheme of requiring street addresses to register to vote which most tribes dont have has enraged the Native American communities there, and galvanized them. As the poster above said, its a question of whether their votes will be rejected. I have heard tribal officials are planning to issue street addresses on the spot at the polls and issue letters to that effect for verification. So there is hope. And she has won before.
As for me, I say send the money where its needed. She needs on the ground GOTV, and that means $$$.

(37,648 posts)In prior elections, I'd heard the polls aren't catching all the new voters, or the ones who don't have landlines so can't answer polls, etc.
Likely voters are not just previous registrants. Lots of registered voters don't reliably vote. The pollsters have other ways to further refine that to identify which of those are most likely to vote. I think that generally, the likely voter polls have been more accurate.
I hope Heidi wins, since she deserves it for having the strength and decency to do the right thing.
The trick on the Native Americans sounds illegal to me. But it's an obvious restriction aimed at them, even if it's legal.

(14,317 posts)Weve had an illegitimate president before, but never one installed by a foreign power. Trump offends the decency of the majority of moderate voters. His numbers are underwater by double digits. This election is a referendum on him, and a fight for the soul of our country as we know it.
As to the voter suppression...all the more reason to fight!

(22,143 posts)party. This is very much appreciated as always. I only wished I had the money to do so myself (donate to candidates more than what I have so far), but what I can do, is encourage others to vote, as well as vote myself.
All I can further say, is that Mr. Steyer is a diamond in the rough, shining brightly!

(51,611 posts)I volunteered to write to arrive. I went to a meeting but they didn't have the postcards so they had us leave our info and addresses to get them by last Fri and I haven't received them yet. I can't get in touch with the person either. Damn, I was ready to write 100 of them.

Our Indivisible group has Postcard Party events every other Sunday. Theyre our most popular and well-attended get-together we have.
We were using postcards provided by the local ACLU, and more postcards provided from a neighboring Congressional district where the Democrat is hoping to flip that seat. We got addresses from both of those groups. Your local or state Democratic Party should be able to help, too. And theyll provide addresses. Our group even provides postage.

(51,611 posts)The rep had a few cards with him and they were addressed and postage was paid too. I already filled out cards for the ACLU with my neighbor several weeks ago and thought if I could get a stack to do at home I could write a lot more of them. I wish I could get some to write when it is convenient for me since I can write really fast when I have my environment set up (I was a teacher and can whip through stuff like that). I don't have social media so it is hard to get in touch with a lot of these groups in a timely manner.
