Federal authorities investigating a spate of pipe bombs sent this week to several prominent critics of President Trump have turned their attention toward southern Florida, believing that a number of the explosive devices were mailed from the area, two people briefed on the matter said Thursday.
The focus on Florida came as law-enforcement officials around the country were scrambling for another day to respond to the mysterious and repeated discovery of the crude devices contained in similar packages. Three more devices were found in Delaware and New York, the F.B.I. said Thursday morning. Two were addressed to former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., a Delaware resident, and a third to the actor Robert De Niro, who lives and works in Lower Manhattan.
All of the 10 packages that have been discovered since Monday bore return addresses from Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democratic congresswoman from Florida.
The continuing wave of bombs has prompted an intense, nationwide investigation into whether people who have criticized the president and been vilified by the right are being targeted. None of the devices has so far exploded on its own, and investigators have been trying to determine whether the devices were indeed capable of detonating.

(814 posts)Well, at least we finally got to the point of hearing that they do not even know if they can detonate. But, I hear they have shrapnel and the parts, so they will be considered a viable threat when prosecuted.

(1,204 posts)now that it's known they can explode. If it was either of those then I would think they would have mailed inert devices that didn't actually risk causing harm.
I hope they figure out who this person is before he (or she, I guess) figures out how to do it correctly.

(814 posts)The article said determining IF they can. I have not read they could. But then, I did not go into the link.

They really should not need this amount of time to see if they could explode. It cannot be that hard to follow the wires.

(17,444 posts)The possibility exists that some were made that can detonate and some that cannot. They don't know if more are out there undelivered as of today. People might let their guard down if they believe the devices are not capable of exploding.

(814 posts)And I did read earlier that because they had the parts and shrapnel, regardless it was being handled as explosive.

The way they were constructed they were not going to go off, one law enforcement source told the Herald. You could not compare then to the Boston Marathon bomber.
Then, there's this from a wanna-be Florida Man:

After watching Goldammer almost fall as he stepped out of the truck, the report says, cops patted him down and found a loaded .357 Magnum revolver in his front waistband. He refused to do field sobriety tests, according to police.
The charges were not for the long gun, but for the two handguns found in the console and the one in his waistband. Its not illegal to own a semiautomatic rifle. But its illegal to open carry in Florida and as far as police could tell, he did not have a concealed weapons permit.
