JEFFERSONTOWN, Ky. (AP) -- Police say multiple people have been shot inside a grocery store on the outskirts of Louisville, Kentucky.

A dispatcher with the Jeffersontown Police Department said a suspect was detained following the shooting Wednesday afternoon at a Kroger store.

The store is located on the eastern outskirts of Louisville.

The dispatcher says officers remain at the scene. The extent of injuries isn't immediately known.

"Steve Zinninger told Wave3 News his father was waiting outside the supermarket when he heard shooting from inside the store and panicked people began running out of the supermarket.

Zinninger said the shooter casually walked toward his father in the parking lot with a gun in his hand. He said his father took out his gun and confronted the man from behind his car.

“He (the armed man) said, ‘please don’t shoot and I won’t shoot you,’ whites don’t kill whites,” Zinninger told Wave3 News, adding that his father said the armed man then took off in a car."

Ed Harrell was waiting for his wife outside a Kroger in Jeffersontown on Wednesday when a man with a gun appeared.

Harrell, a Louisville resident, said he came face to face with the alleged shooter — later identified by police as 51-year-old Gregory Bush — outside the grocery.

The Jeffersontown Police Department confirmed that two people, a man inside the Kroger and a woman in the parking lot, were killed. Bush, who is being held on a $5 million bond, was arraigned Thursday morning on two counts of murder and 10 counts of wanton endangerment.

The man charged with shooting and killing two people at a suburban Louisville Kroger on Wednesday has a history of mental illness, made racist threats and repeatedly called his ex-wife the N-word, according to court records.

Jeffersontown police are not speculating on whether race was a motive in the killing of 69-year-old Maurice Stallard and 67-year-old Vicki Lee Jones, both of whom were black. The alleged shooter, 51-year-old Gregory A. Bush Sr., is white.

However, Jeffersontown Police Chief Sam Rogers told reporters Thursday afternoon that Bush tried to enter the predominantly black First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown about 10 minutes before the Kroger shooting.

Rogers said police were investigating whether Bush was legally permitted to carry firearms. But on several occasions, court records show, judges ordered Bush's guns taken from him, and a domestic violence conviction in 2009 prevents him from legally owning a firearm.
