McConnell Calls For Cutting Government Programs To Deal With 'Disturbing' Debt

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called on Congress to rein in major government programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security in order to slow America’s spiraling national debt on Tuesday, ignoring the fact the tax plan he recently passed has further grown that number.

“It’s very disturbing, and it’s driven by the three big entitlement programs that are very popular: Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. That’s 70 percent of what we spend every year,” he said on Bloomberg News Tuesday when asked about the national debt. “There’s been a bipartisan reluctance to tackle entitlement changes because of the popularity of those programs. Hopefully at some point here we’ll get serious about this. We haven’t been yet.”

McConnell’s comments give Democrats more fodder for an argument that they’ve been making in campaigns across the map: That the GOP will ultimately try to pay for its tax cuts by slashing social programs.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projected that the GOP tax cuts would add $1.9 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. The loss of government revenue from the cuts has been a larger proportional loss than what was caused by the Great Recession, according to the New York Times.

Return to the tax rates of the Eisenhower administration. A top tax rate of 90% for the wealthy sounds about right to me. Capital gains taxes were around 25%, so if your main source of income was investments you didn't end up paying 90% of your income in taxes. When Jared Kushner pays zero dollars in income tax, something is amiss in this rotten Republican run country.

but this has been going on for decades, but really gained momentum when "W" was in office. The conservative machine has been masterful at messaging (job creators, entitlements, takers, less regulations, small government, etc.) to convince vast segments of the general public to support policies that are literally contrary to their financial security and overall general welfare. It never ceases to amaze me how so many people continue to believe that cutting taxes and financial regulation of the wealthiest members of this society will somehow trickle down to benefit them and their families. The effectiveness of their propaganda campaign has be nothing short of amazing.

Then we cut the Senate Republican Caucus. Send all of 'em home. We don't need them.

Then we cut the House Republican Caucus. IN TOTO. Not one Republican in the House of Representatives is worth a plugged nickel.

Then we get rid of Trump's unaffordable tax cut, the five Republicans on the Supreme Court, and cap the number of F-35s in the fleet at what we have now.

Tue Oct 16, 2018, 05:32 PM
Oct 2018

The U.S. Senate on Monday voted to give the military $716 billion for 2019, approving one of the biggest defense budgets in modern American history despite concerns from some economists and lawmakers about the rapidly rising federal deficit.

The 2019 military budget, approved by an 85-to-10 vote, gives America's armed forces an $82 billion increase from 2017.

The military has called the additional funding necessary to improve its ability to respond to international crises, while critics say Congress should not be giving a significant boost to spending at the Defense Department at a moment of relatively diminished U.S. military involvement around the globe. About 17 percent of America's $4 trillion federal budget goes to the military, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security have nothing to do with taxes. They are funded separately through paycheck withholdings.

Mitch McConnell is LYING when he says that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security contribute to the national debt. Period.

Lock him up.

What's their idea?
This could increase the support for Democrats especially with older citizens.

I don't get it.

Cutting taxes for the rich, then using the resultant ballooning deficit as an excuse to cut social programs is the classic Republican M.O.

It's all part of the GOP Shock Doctrine described by Naomi Klein: create a crisis and use it to push through policies that would otherwise be unthinkable.

Exactly what I expected!
They give away the house to the .01% in tax giveaways and then cry about the deficit!
"OMG, we must cut those awful social programs"!

Especially since they might loose the house in the midterms. They always SCREAM when there are
a few dems in charge somewhere after they have sunk the budget! Might as well get an advance
run on the process!

As I've said in other posts, the Dems. should be clobbering these buttholes on the tax cuts, their
"mob" anti-constitutional comments, and the whole kitchen sink, but Noooooooooo…. Just smile, and
get creamed again. I'm convinced they actually want to lose!

My neck is hurting from Shaking my Head!!

and absolutely idiotic tax cuts overheating the economy.

Good job dipshits, they're going to wish they had some of that tax revenue when the Trump recession starts.

The only way to reverse the debt is if they cancelled BOTH tax cuts for the rich, and reversed all Trumpian bullshit.

Why not try to take out all the entitlement programs, since you know that Trump will just do something dangerous and outrageous to soak up all the attention. Do you really expect Fox News to cover this?

They were bribed by having their campaigns financed by super wealthy donors who then threatened them , give us our huge tax cuts or we'll cut off funding your campaigns, so they did. Now that they drove the deficit sky high for them and their policies , they want to cut programs for our security and safety by destroying Medicaid, Medicare ,and Social Security just like they're doing to the ACA and all health care for the American people. Remember when trump claimed the opposite, he wouldn't do anything hurting those programs? Once again people are realizing they were lied too about everything , and conned for their votes. Bet it doesn't happen again this time. Many are running from trump and the gop and all their corruption and election fixing they are involved in. Seniors should all wake up , they will destroy all these programs if you vote for them again.
