Woman fired after blocking black man from entering his apartment building

Source: CBS News

A white St. Louis woman was fired from her job Sunday after she tried to prevent a black man from entering the luxury apartment building where he lives. D'Arreion Toles said he was returning home from work when the unidentified tenant physically blocked him from entering the building at the Elder Shirt Lofts in the city's downtown.

Tribeca Luxury Apartments in St. Louis said it was "disturbed" by the interaction in the video and confirmed the woman in the video was an employee, CBS affiliate KMOV-TV reports. After reviewing the incident, the company said the woman was terminated from her position. It noted that the incident did not happen at one of its properties.

Toles recorded the incident on his cellphone and posted footage of the incident on Facebook. The video has more than 4 million views and has been shared over 113,000 times. The videos show the woman demanding proof that Toles lives in the apartment building. She can be seen standing in front of the entrance, refusing to let him in.

Toles eventually pushes past the woman, who follows him to his apartment door. He said police arrived at his apartment about 30 minutes after he entered his apartment, but they left without giving anyone a citation.

I heard an NPR interview last week in which a young woman who is a Trump supporter actually said that she believes racism is just made up by the media because she has never experienced it and she went to school with black kids. The lack of understanding or even willingness to learn about other peoples’ experiences boggles the brain.

He wants to have a conversation?! I'm tired of soft, sell-out Brutha's like this! File charges and put her butt in jail, for her and all of racist associates to think about it. He's just enabling more racists to do similar things.

So many cry about "lack of civility", but most who do are just like the woman in this video.
So many people feel they are privileged, just like the woman in the video.
It's ugly out there.

a citation or even a harassment charge or something, but this has nothing to do with her work. I am very uncomfortable with firing people for non-work-related activity like this. It's very dangerous.

What if he had been what she thought he was? He would have knocked her down or beaten her or worse. What an incredibly stupid woman! And then she wanted to get in the elevator with him and followed him up the stairs? All of it while she and he were alone?! Her dog wasn’t going to protect her. I can’t believe how stupid and pigheaded she was. I’m glad he slammed the door in her face.

some racists feel uncomfortable with the idea of minorities living in an apartment with the word "luxury", which they assume to mean "whites only".

This white lady felt entitled to take on a security role. This could have gone a very different way if she had called the police claiming burglary in progress and "he may have a weapon".

She may have to move if she can't afford the rent after being fired.

And then wasn't clued in by the fact he entered the apartment, possibly with a key?

Then called the police? I guess it's possible she called the police before that, but he should have been the one calling the police on her harassing and stalking him.

It's always a good idea to keep an eye open at your residence, but here's how the interaction goes:

"Oh, hi! Do you live here?"
"Yeah, I do."
"I haven't seen you before. Nice to meet you, I'm Stacey."

(alternately)
"Oh, hi! Do you live here?"
"No, I don't."
"Are you visiting someone?"
"Yes."
"Would you like me to let them know you're here?"
"No, they know, I'm waiting, thanks."
"Have a good evening!"

If the person is "up to no good" as she suspected and not just visiting someone else, usually having a brief chat with them is enough to send them away because you've acknowledged their presence on the premises which is a strike against committing a successful crime.

The next time some one tells me they don't believe white privilege exists, I will direct them to this video.

He was a lot more civil than I would have been. I would have told her in no uncertain terms to get out of my way. Then I would have called the building management, then the police, then my lawyer.
