Canada politician says crucifix 'not religious symbol'

Source: BBC

The newly-elected premier of Quebec in Canada has raised eyebrows by saying a crucifix hanging in the provincial legislature is not a religious symbol.

François Legault's remarks come despite his government plan to ban civil servants from wearing items of clothing such as hijabs and the Jewish skullcap.

The policy has been widely criticised as it targets minority groups.

A 2008 report said the crucifix which has been hanging in the legislature since 1936 should be removed.

If you're not from Canada, you might not get Quebec. The whole French Language, French culture thing. Repeated referenda on separation, laws protecting the french language.

It's a strange place.

They're really progressive, on average - way ahead of the rest of the country on gay marriage, for instance - but very, very protective of any perceived assaults on their culture. And so their sort-of "traditional protection" of French language on radio and television often gets stretched to include "traditional symbols" ... like the fleur-de-lys and ... the cross.

If you haven't studied the last 200 years of history, England trying to stamp out France followed by anglo politicans trying to stomp out French language, you might not get the whole host of issues that gets piled into this sort of thing.

The Quebecquois are . . . unique.

I have relatives in NS who are so tired of all the French language signs. In NS, where NO ONE speaks French.
