Trump's Trade War Is Leaving Missourians Bruised, But Not Broken

Source: newsy

So far, the benefits of Trump's trade policies have yet to materialize across Missouri; a CBS poll in September found only 18 percent of likely voters in the state had seen positive effects from the trade war in their community.

But Missouri also hasn't turned against the president's trade agenda just yet either: Trump won the state by 19 points in 2016, and his approval rating is still holding steady in most polls.

And that support for Trump could give Hawley the edge in his contest with McCaskill. His message on trade — that better trade deals with China are worth some economic discomfort — seems to be resonating with people like Hays.

Hays said, "We need those markets to open up, we need better agreements. Most farmers will agree that needs to happen. We've been talking and wanting that for so long. We've finally got an administration that's said, enough's enough, we're going to do this."

And then they won't be polled again because the election would be over and the media will disappear.

Because it takes a brave person to admit they were wrong and the GOP is filled with cowards. What eventually happens is that they disappear back under the rocks from whence they crawled and you don't hear from them again.

Trump (or atvleast someone in his administration) was savvy in getting NAFTA II signed before the midterms. His supporters now expect that a deal with China is just around the corner because China won’t be able to hold out against Trump for long. I have a relative whose business has been hurt by the trade war, but he is convinced that it’s just a matter of time before Trump teaches China a lesson and great rewards will follow. What he and others refuse to think about—because Fox pushes the narrative that Trump is winning against China—is that China is forming long-term relationships with other suppliers and they may never buy as much as they once did of U.S. products. They also underestimate the sentiment of a people who may be forced to concede some territory to a bully (since they can’t get all their soybeans needs from other countries yet), but they then find other ways to get even with the bully. China already owns a large amount of U.S. debt, and we need to keep borrowing at a record pace because of the recent tax cuts. So what happens if China decides to fund less of our debt or none of it to retaliate for the trade war? China seems invested in outlasting Trump, and they may just have the resources to do so.

5. Help Farmers?!?

How the @#%! is this going to help farmers?!? Numb-skulls, there were no real restrictions on farm commodity goods before Trump started this. Now there is and China is looking to change suppliers. Commodity farmers may never get these markets back or it will take decades to get back to where they were a couple of years ago. You can't explain anything to these people.

They are unwilling and/or unable to listen to reason and facts.

It truly is a waste of breath to try to. The most dangerous subset of people in this country are those who are ignorant and uninformed but continue to believe that they are more intelligent than others.

in the STLMO and KCMO metro areas) that feel that rump is hurting the country, is an idiot, and has not the slightly inkling of what he is doing.

Idiot farmers and ranchers don't control the state politics and make up a tiny share of MO's economic output, compared to the total output of cars, trucks, and other manufactured goods and Missourians in these businesses are hurting. The tariff wars are threatening to shut down businesses (and may have already) and Josh Hawley is no economic guru by any measure.

Josh Hawley is a liar and a hypocrite. Said he wouldn't leapfrog from elected position to elected position, a lie. He joined other state AGs against coverage for existing conditions, and then in an AD clearly stated that he was for the ACA and existing conditions, which is it, JH? Hypocrite. And to top it off, he's a lawyer of all things. Now don't get me wrong, but we have way too many lawyers, former prosecutors, attorney generals, etc. all lawyers running for and already are in elected offices across the land. Enough.
