Gov. Larry Hogan leads Democrat Ben Jealous by 20 points, Post-U. Md. poll finds
Source: Washington Post
With less than a month until Election Day, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has built a formidable lead over Democratic challenger Ben Jealous, with few voters undecided, and most preferring the incumbent Republican even on key Jealous policy issues such as health care and education, a new Washington Post-University of Maryland poll finds.
Likely voters in Maryland support Hogan by a 20-point margin, 58 percent to 38 percent. Just 5 percent have not settled on a candidate.

I'd say a fair number of MD voters will split a ticket with Hogan and Cardin.
Worth remembering: Not every Republican politician is a Trump acolyte, and not every Republican voter is a sexist, racist bible-thumper.

So if a Reep is associated with the party, then
they are all those things.
Period.

(93 posts)Anybody, anybody who votes for a Republican in this day in age is questionable. Don't care if it's only for dog catcher. Any support for Republican platform at any level is tainted.

(23,423 posts)According to another poll that's from late last month (https://cdn.s3-media.wbal.com/Media/2018/09/27/75e03440-72f7-4096-ac56-1e6672ffcc33/original.pdf):
- 17% of black voters support Hogan;
- 65% of white voters support Hogan; and
- 32% of Democrats support Hogan.
I understand that 17% black support is high for a Republican. That said: it seems that a lot of white Democrats are supporting Hogan. While cross-tabs by party by race aren't given, I think it's entirely possible that they would show more white Democrats supporting Hogan than the Democratic candidate. I think that, given the underlying demographic data, at least 40% of white Democrats who responded to the poll reporting supporting the Republican candidate.

I deal with people on a weekly basis who I'm sure are "R" voters, and I also know they're not racist, sexist, etc. They ARE different though. But a few are also tiring of trumps antics from what I overhear.

Besides the state legislature is solidly blue, so not as if he can do much damage if he wanted.
This is the type of governance we should see more of - not less.

(42,862 posts)Even though I voted for Rushern Baker, I felt certain that with a Bernie Sanders endorsement, that would all but guarantee that Ben Jealous would be headed to the Governor's mansion.
But, I wonder if it would help anything if Bernie Sanders returned here to help FIRE UP all the progressives who seem to have lost interest in voting for Ben Jealous (or maybe they just never had interest to begin with).
Whatever is it's that's going on... and whatever it is that is keeping Ben Jealous from gaining traction, I must say that it's very disappointing.
Turin_C3PO
(14,009 posts)I honestly cant remember. I supported Sanders but his endorsement may not help much.

(42,862 posts)I don't know if Bernie's endorsement helped Jealous to win the primaries or if it was a non-event that didn't help one way or the other. But, as far as I can tell, Bernie isn't all that popular in Maryland anyway. I wonder if endorsements can have a negative effect on a campaign.

(42,862 posts)... I suspect that the different racial, cultural and economic demographics have something to do with that as well.
All I'm trying to say is that when it comes to things like this, the "one-size-fits-all" political philosophy doesn't always work when dealing with a more diverse population.

(58 posts)He doesn't take pac money from Corporations his support is of small donors like Bernie did that's why you don't see him running ads on TV and is targeting new voters and people who normally sit out elections and is trying to run a election on the ground. He may loose but don't be surprise if this election is closer than the polls show. These polls are of likely voters who normally vote
