Eduardo Vela: 'Stolen babies' doctor escapes punishment in Spain

Source: BBC

A Madrid court has let off a former doctor over stealing newborn babies from their mothers and supplying them to infertile couples.

The court found gynaecologist Eduardo Vela, 85, had committed the crimes but could not legally be convicted because too much time had elapsed.

He was the first person to go on trial for illegal adoptions that took place during and after the fascist dictatorship of General Franco.
...
After Franco's triumph in Spain's 1936-1939 civil war, many children were removed from families identified by the fascist regime as left-wing and given to families considered more deserving.

Whenever there has been a chance, with progressive presidents, like the Kirchners, total efforts have been made to find these monsters and prosecute them.

The pattern had already been set in Spain by the Franco regime. What a filthy, despicable thing to do to your imagined political enemies and their entire families.

The article from the BBC posted above says that the kidnappings had the full blessings of the "Church," since Franco was deeply approved by and involved with the Church in Spain.

This man is wildly out of place. Vela has needed to be in prison for decades.

Cheeto has numerous Latin American right-wingers in his administration. As such, all know about these crimes in detail and of course support their having been committed.

Another similar, well-known case is that of Dr. Jorge Magnacco in Argentina - the infamous ESMA detention camp obstetrician who delivered at least two dozen babies from abducted women (later killed), mostly in 1977-78.

Magnacco had been sentenced to 15 years in 2012; but he was freed last December for having "served his sentence." He's 77; but still in fairly good health.

It's no secret the Macri regime is leaning on federal courts (even having judges removed) to grant as many transfers from jail to house arrest, and as many outright release orders, as possible.

He even sent a delegation to an IACHR meeting in Boulder, CO, last week to advocate for amnesty for Dirty War-era perpetrators. Over 1,000 were jailed during his predecessor's term.

Thanks for posting this, Muriel V. I suspect some in the Cheeto regime may find themselves in the same situation in the not-too distant future.

for non-Trump supporters of childbearing age, should 45 continue his cruel presidency through 2020 and beyond.
Never think "it can't happen here".

Thousands of babies were removed from their mothers and given to affluent Roman Catholic families

A Spanish doctor who became the first person to stand trial over the "stolen babies" scandal has walked free from a court in Madrid on a technicality.

Eduardo Vela, and 85-year-old former gynaecologist was accused of taking Inés Madrigal from her mother in 1969 and giving her to another woman, Ines Perez, who was incorrectly certified as her birth mother.

Ms Perez admitted before her death that the doctor had given them the child as "a gift" because they did not have children.

Ms Madrigal was one of thousands of babies were removed from their mothers during General Francisco Franco's fascist dictatorship between 1939-1975. Some have estimated that up to 300,000 were taken.
