Mitch McConnell Refuses to Say He Won't Confirm a SCOTUS Nominee Next Presidential Election Year
Source: Mediaite
On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace repeatedly asked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConell (R-KY) whether he would commit to the so-called Garland standard and not seat a Supreme Court Justice in the next Presidential election year, should there be a vacancy on the court before the end of Donald Trumps first term. McConnell repeatedly refused to agree.
Wallace said that the Senate had paid a price in the confirmation of newly seated Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and played a clip of Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) railing against Republicans for complaining about delays when Judge Merrick Garland was delayed past the election and out of his nomination.
We didnt attack Merrick Garlands background and try to destroy him, we didnt go on a search and destroy mission McConnell said of Schumers comments. We simply followed the tradition in America which is that if you have a party of a different a senate of a different party than the president you dont fill a vacancy created in a presidential year. That went all the way back to 1888.

Wallace asked about his specificity now on the party difference. When you blocked Merrick Garlands nomination from President Obama, you basically said that we dont do this in a presidential election year, and that we wait until the election and then whoever the people choose, they get to pick the Supreme Court nominee, said Wallace. But what you just said now was its a question of whether or not the part in control of the Senate is different than the president.

(5,113 posts)1) make puerto rico a state
2) make washingtn dc a state carving out the white house capital and government buildings to sidestep the district clause of the constitution
3) change the judiciary act of 1869 so that there are 11 justices on the court instead of 9. or if trump adds any more for every one he adds add 2 more .
this will result in
a) 4 more reliably democratic senators
b) 3 more reliably democratic electoral votes
c) the nullification of kavenaugh

(394 posts)This is a man who's approval rating in his own state is 18%, he does not care what anyone thinks except himself and whoever he is trying to please. I don't think he's in a conspiracy with Trump, I think he has his own plan; maybe that plan is how he thinks the US should be, maybe it's to help some group of donors, maybe it's just because he's a crazy old man. However anyone who has that low of an approval rating can't be reasoned with or expected to do anything that isn't in their own self interest.
