Brett Kavanaugh confirmed to Supreme Court

Source: cnn

The Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court Saturday afternoon, likely cementing a conservative majority on the court for a generation and bringing to an end months of bitter partisan feuding marked by shocking allegations of sexual assault and vehement and angry denials from the nominee.

So there were 32 Senators. Now there are 100. Winning by 1 vote meant a much higher percentage back then.

On edit:

I Googled it and I believe you are referring to this 1881 vote:

In fact, only one other justice in the nation's history has been confirmed on a one-vote basis: former justice Stanley Matthews, who was first nominated in the closing days of Rutherford Hayes' presidency; the Senate did not act on that nomination. Hayes' successor, James Garfield, renominated Matthews, however, and he was confirmed on a 24–23 vote on May 12, 1881. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/chrisgeidner/kavanaugh-vote-supreme-court-historic

A 24 - 23 vote means the winner won by 51%. Today's vote of 50 - 48 means the winner won by 51%.

So the 1800s justice was confirmed by the same narrow 51% margin as Kavanaugh.

They are not that stupid. As long as Roe remains in force it will give them the same talking point they have used for years to keep winning elections. Their base will remain riled up over Roe and they will keep going to the polls to vote Republican. Overturning Roe takes that all away.

Our only recourse is to start winning more elections, especially presidential elections. A President Elizabeth Warren would have the opportunity to change the balance on the Court back to where it should be.

Roger B. Taney

Roger Brooke Taney (/ˈtɔːni/ TAW-nee; March 17, 1777 – October 12, 1864) was the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, holding that office from 1836 until his death in 1864. He delivered the majority opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), that ruled, among other things, that African Americans, having been considered inferior at the time the United States Constitution was drafted, were not part of the original community of citizens and, whether free or slave, could not be considered citizens of the United States. This ruling created an uproar among abolitionists and the free states of the northern U.S. He was the first Roman Catholic (and first non-Protestant) appointed both to a presidential cabinet, as Attorney General under President Andrew Jackson, and to the Court.

The Kavanaugh majority will determine that the "undue burdue" test on abortion regulations will never be met, that virtually any abortion regulation will not amount to an undue burden on abortion.

That is how Kavanaugh ruled in the case of the 17 year old immigrant girl who wanted an abortion. He ruled that requiring her to first get a government-assigned sponsor (something she had been unable to do) was not an undue burden. If needlessly requiring the impossible before she can get an abortion is not an undue burden, nothing is.

I know I know, its not healthy to dwell on that meme, but dammit!!!

If justice was served, The USA would be still respected around the globe. Have the first female President ever. Have a Democratic House, maybe Senate. But also, have a SCOTUS with Garland and some other justice put forth by Hillary Clinton, a clear majority of moderate and sane justices for decades. Paris accord would be adhered to. No nasty attacks on allies. The ACA fixed and strengthened, and perhaps opened up to a public option as a stepping stone towards single payer. None of the Obama accomplishments dismantled.

Its so extra depressing not because Democratic policy was simply stalled, but that it was literally reversed, gas pedal floored, and gone crashing into other cars houses people. sigh.

I know I am new but I had to share this and if some wants to post it as a new thread that is fine. If someone wants to tell me I am wrong that is fine. Yes Roe v Wade is a huge concern but this is something worse---in a sense.

Gamble vs United States,

https://www.theusconstitution.org/litigation/gamble-v-united-states/

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/trump-gamble-court-case/

Basically if Gamble wins it makes Presidential Pardon all powerful. The states will NOT be able to charge a person on a state level for a federal crime he was charge with and Pardon by the President.

Does anyone know about it?

But an audio tape of DT himself openly admitting he sexually assaults women wasn't enough, so BK should only be part of the message.

The one scandal of a large catalog that united the country across almost all demographics was locking up children in cages. I hope that we can somehow remind people what it felt like when they first heard a 6 year old child crying for their mother, surrounded by chicken wire. I know I will never forget.

Hopefully that will cause enough people to pull their heads out of their ass finally and maybe we will start seeing these assholes get voted out of office.
