McConnell calls opposition to Kavanaugh a 'great political gift' to Republicans

Source: The Washington Post

By Seung Min Kim October 6 at 1:16 PM

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he never considered urging the White House to withdraw Brett M. Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court and called opposition to the judge a “great political gift” for Senate Republicans in next month’s midterm elections.

In an interview with The Washington Post ahead of Kavanaugh’s near-certain confirmation on Saturday afternoon, the Kentucky Republican again underscored his confidence in Kavanaugh’s innocence while decrying the “mob” of protesters who had descended on GOP senators. McConnell also said he didn’t know he had the votes until senators were actually on the floor and voting.

“I never thought Judge Kavanaugh would withdraw,” McConnell said during the interview with The Post. “When your integrity is attacked like his was, a withdrawal was certainly no solution to that, so we were in the fight to the finish.”

McConnell, overseeing a razor-thin 51-49 GOP majority, said he became confident he had the votes only when the roll call happened Friday morning, when the Senate narrowly moved to advance Kavanaugh’s nomination. He announced last week that the Senate would vote on Friday following a brief FBI investigation — a probe demanded by a trio of influential Republican senators who had yet to decide how they would vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination.

In November.

Women aren’t stupid. They know the men in the GOP use women as meat shields. Having the woman prosecutor grill Dr. Ford on their behalf hid nothing. Susan Collins was selected to deliver their talking points because the men of the GOP know they are loathed.

But the thing is, they are fooling no one but themselves. The GOP is a party of craven, sleazy cowards. Kavanaugh only bolsters what the majority of Americans already know.

It should be rectified and replaced by majority vote. Another compromise was states rights. Their should be one law of the land for federal issues. Local governments rights should be restricted to local issues. This latter issue will come into increasing play with Kavanaugh on the bench. Many don't believe that the Supreme Court will reverse Roe vs. Wade but with the majority will declare state restrictions constitutional. That is the problem with states rights being able to ignore federal law it creates a ridiculous situation. An example is liquor laws which allow states, cities and counties to ignore the repeal of prohibition. The problem is that most of the objections and exceptions are based on religious convictions and it is the a case of people is control imposing their religious dogmas on the entirety of those in their jurisdiction. It is ironic in that the very people who are opposed to government control are the worst abusers of what they oppose. What can be more fundamental than a women's control of her own body.

My first thought was he is full of shit because the independents and Dems are so furious. Then I thought - How can they turn this to their advantage?

My answer was they have to make it about protecting him and Trump from impeachment from the evil Democrats.

That might be what they are thinking of doing in these last days until the election.

Looking back on this it's clear it was planned.

McConnell figured they could have a pretend FBI investigation. I would guess they even chose exactly which agents would do the investigation. Then had the three of them come out and call for it. Trump went along with the plan.

A fake investigation, a week later, those three can pretend they did some serious deliberation and after much thought came to the conclusion that kavanaugh was a good man.

And the senator who had the most to lose, she could vote no (murkowski) which would get her all kinds of brownie points and keep her in her seat.

The GOP has rallied their base by lying, just as they always do. And they have persuaded many independents of a non-existent conspiracy, just like they always do.

I realize that this isn't what many people want to hear. But it may will turn out to be reality.

I hope it doesn't. But in the past the GOP has repeatedly been rewarded for doing the wrong thing and smearing Democrats. Remember the so-called Wellstone funeral rally?
